Attorney Wilfred Yeargan is absolutely excellent. He explained the process to obtain the best possible outcome for my traffic violation very clearly (this is my first ever experience seeking legal representation) and I am very grateful for his help. He secured the best possible outcome for me and I would highly recommend his expertise. Thank you sir!

Lysandra helped me with questions I had regarding the Adjustment of Status I-130 and I-485 application. She explained my options regarding I-131 travel parole and biometrics. Due to the current Covid situation, no lawyer can speed things up and she was honest about that. She was very informative and provided great advice. Thank you so much!

Mrs. Pachuta represented me in 2015 for a heafty possession charge in Fairfax County in August 2015. After speaking with other lawyers who spoke about going to trial and some jail time or probation. I was a bit scared and had no idea what to do. Found her here on Avvo, and from the consultation to the hearing she kept me well informed and confident in the best outcome. Long story short it only made to the hearing with a verdict of nolle prosequi. Thanks to her it was a stepping stone to getting my life back together. Forward 5 years later, I'm returning to her for a reckless ticket because of how well she represented me in the past.

I found that Mr. Crowley had a high level of integrity and knowledge, and seemed genuinely concerned about the case as an individual, rather than just another case number on the dock. During the trial, Mr. Crowley asked all the relevant questions, reviewed all the documents of the opposing counsel, he found the inconsistencies with the plaintiff’s testimony, and was VERY concise with the cross examination. I expected the best he had to offer and he delivered. I highly recommend Mr. Crowley!

I consulted with Matthew about a potentially serious and expensive legal entanglement. His advice was very on-point and helpful.

I hired Matthew Crowley as counsel, and he handled my case very well. I had no prior experience with the court system and had a lot of (mostly basic) questions, and he answered all of them with patience and clarity. He was willing and able to explain each step of the process, including his actions (e.g. requesting a continuation) and why he took them in this case. My case was dismissed before the trial date, largely in part due to his work, and he did the work to have my records expunged. Thank you, Matthew!

In 2017, I was seeking legal expertise in the area of Elder Care. My journey led me to Jean Galloway Ball. Since then, she has been instrumental in guiding me through/about Elder Care as well as Estate Planning/Trusts. She was able to assess my situations immediately, provide the challenges ahead for me, options for resolutions, thorough in ensuring I understood all documentation, and, above all else, understood me. I am thankful for her knowledge, frankness, concern, and patience. As a result of her professional demeanor, and just who she is, I felt at ease during and after each session even though, many times, the situation that I was dealing with didn’t warrant it. I highly recommend Jean Galloway Ball. She will never give up on her client.

Jean Galloway Ball is a superb attorney in every way. We hired her to represent us in a difficult estate litigation matter. I am an attorney myself and I had very high standards. She met and even exceeded them throughout the litigation. She has great judgment, is very responsive, produces excellent work product and works really hard to represent your interests. I am very happy we hired Jean to represent us.

My husband left behind a very muddled and complicated estate with no will, loans that were owed him, real estate owned in several states, a construction project that was barely started, unpaid taxes, money in a foreign account that was frozen, a safe deposit box owned by him alone and a jealous girl friend who sued me. Jean and her associates have helped me through the process of becoming the administrator of his estate, reactivate my late husbands LLC so I can continue the construction project and has countered the suit effectively. Jean has begun the process of forcing the repayments of the loans by placing liens against the debtors property which he has for sale thereby preventing sale without repayment of his loan. There is still much to be done, but I have confidence in Jean's ability to advise me and help me find the specialized help I need to complete this task..

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
