Unfortunately, while we were traveling from Pennsylvania to Virginia for vacation, my family and I were involved in a serious crash with a dump trunk. We suddenly found ourselves in need of legal assistance, and we were lost as to what to do since we were located in Pennsylvania and the case needed to be litigated in Virginia. So, we went in search of attorneys who would be able to help. While searching through a long list of candidates and their qualifications we came across a listing for Donna Miller Rostant. Not only was Donna an attorney but she also holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a specialty in women’s health. This was exactly what I was looking for due to the nature of my injuries. I needed an advocate that would understand what I was going through and also be able to provide the support necessary for this case. Not only did I find that advocate in Donna, but I could not have asked for a better team to handle my case than Donna and Ann. Donna and Ann went the extra mile to make sure that I clearly understood what was going on, I never felt like there were miles between us and they made communicating an ease. When traveling was necessary, they were more than accommodating to my schedule. Donna and Ann answered all of my questions expertly and explained things so I could understand them, even if I asked them more than once, they always offered me sound advice, and I never felt like I was an imposition. They made me feel at ease, and they made sure that I was properly prepared for my deposition and ultimately my trial. Not only did my trial end successfully, but my other family members also had favorable settlements thanks to Donna and Ann. Most importantly though, throughout this entire process, I always felt that Donna and Ann cared about my family and me and we still keep in touch.

If you should find yourself needing expert, compassionate legal support for medical malpractice, call Ms. Rostant. After experiencing medical complications and permanent damage due to a provider’s errors, I contacted Ms. Rostant for help in evaluating my situation. Donna is approachable, welcomes your concerns and questions, and has a long history of successful results. Donna treated me with professional courtesy as well as a balance of legal explanations and lay person translations ensuring that I clearly understood the situation, my options, her recommendations, and the possible results for a variety of scenarios as we moved forward. I provided needed medical records, participated in interviews, created timelines, and assisted in documenting the impact the medical malpractice in my personal and professional life. I was supported, informed, and guided through the complex legal process. As a lay person, the medical and legal thresholds and nuances were initially beyond my understanding. At a time when I was enduring multiple surgeries, experiencing pain and taking time from my profession for recoveries, Donna patiently walked me through the maze with a focus on our mutually decided best outcome. When I was exhausted and struggling, Donna’s professional support accommodated my needs and supported me during this very difficult time. I highly recommend Donna Rostant.

I have nothing but the highest accolades I can think of to pass along regarding my experience with Donna Rostant. She was energetic, professional, sharp and tough on the folks from the other side of our case. She took the time to explain every step of the process and went to pains to assure she had my input on any critical decisions along the way. It felt like teamwork throughout. I was very satisfied with the final result and remain convinced I could not have found a better attorney.

Alex Laufer took my case and represented me throughout a long and challenging insurance settlement following a vehicle accident that caused me irreparable injury and chronic pain. He worked the case with determination and resourceful strategy and obtained a settlement that was fair to all parties. Most important to me, he obtained that result with unquestionable integrity, and without causing animosity or ill will with the insurance companies and parties involved. When the case was concluded, everyone walked away from the experience with the sense that it was a routine business transaction. If I ever need a lawyer again, I will not hesitate to call Alex or his law firm for help.

Mr. Laufar not only approached the case as requested, he also introduced other variables that resulted in a larger award. He explained parts of the law that we were not aware of at the time. Had we gone to Mr. Laufar 6 months earlier, we would have had a much larger award than obtained at the end of the case. If any follow-up work is required, we will definitely go back to Mr. Laufar and we do recommend him for any legal action.

Contrary to what many people think, all lawyers are not out for just winning. While this is the main goal, of course, Mr. Smith not only pressed to win and did a great job of handling my case- he genuinely cared about me and the outcome of this very painful and delicate case.

I’ve worked with Mr. Sodowsky, Ms. Kim and the entire Sodowsky Law Firm for years. They have helped me step by step to turn a huge nightmare into a new lease on life. They have been there through all the highs/lows one experiences when you have very serious tax issues. Through it all, they gave me expert advice but were also the most decent people to work with. Their hope, honesty and general kindness kept me upbeat and knowing the light at the end of the tunnel was near.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
