Steve Goldman and his team did an incredible job; if you are looking for an attorney that specializes in navigating high conflict divorce with child custody I would recommend Steve. He is realistic, honest, hardworking, fair, and direct, all qualities you need as you move through the court systems and divorce. Steve is also a family man and very understanding as to the emotional complexities you will be personally dealing with. I would recommend Steve to anyone and I feel extremely blessed to have had him and his team throughout a very difficult legal process.

I was charged with reckless driving and I tried to fight it without a lawyer and that took 3 month when the judge postponed the dates even if the officer was not present. I hired Mark and he gathered all the evidence and the date of the hearing he explained to the judge how the bureaucracy of the entire court process took my time as well as the judges and the judge threw the case and dismissed the entire charge. Mark was very professional and to the point. I highly recommend him.

Wayne is not only a fantastic litigator and attorney, but someone I now consider a friend. Wayne takes time to explain things to you, work through your issues, and listen to any issues and concerns you have. Always a phone call or email away, Wayne responds on the weekend if you need him. Mr. Bigg's unparalleled dedication to excellence comes through with each client he has the opportunity to work with.

Our family had a difficult real estate transaction involving uncooperative relatives and a challenging buyer. Samantha did an incredible job getting the sale across the finish line with successful results. She was extremely responsive, always available and courteous. Samantha was able to work through additional obstacles with my being out-of-state. We highly recommend Samantha and wouldn't hesitate to use her again for any legal matters.

My disabled son is turning 18. Ms. Fredieu assisted my wife and I with the guardianship proceedings. In our first meeting she clearly laid out what information she needed from us. once the information was provided she just took care of the rest; all we had to do was show up in court. She took the anxiety out of what could have been a complicated legal mess. To top it off the legal fees came in under budget. I could not be more pleased.

At the beginning of 2016 my aunt, who was living in an assisted living facility, was getting very frustrated with a relative who was handling her funds but not providing any accounting of her assets. Not knowing how to proceed to help my aunt, I asked the facility where she resides for a recommendation of an attorney who might have experience in a situation like ours. They recommended Hale Ball and we are so happy they did. After an initial consultation with my aunt and I, lawyer Samantha Fredieu gave us a plan on how to try and get an accounting of the assets. Thanks to Samantha’s quick actions, we immediately gained control of my aunt’s assets but discovered our worst fears; the relative had misappropriated a large sum of money from my aunt. Samantha suggested ( and we agreed) to file a lawsuit to recover the funds. Samantha guided us through all of our choices, explaining in detail which venue was better for our case, state or federal court. After carefully weighing all our options with Samantha, we chose to file our lawsuit in Virginia federal court. Samantha and her firm jumped right into the case and quickly filed an action. Samantha litigated very professionally and always worked with us to keep expenses as low as possible. The relative fought back hard and made the case unnecessarily complicated, but Samantha and her firm thwarted every attempt by the relative to try to get the case dismissed. After a year of very hard work and multiple appearances before the judge, we won our case with summary judgment and not having to go to trial. We succeeded at every level we had hoped and thanks to Samantha’s efforts, we didn’t have to have my aunt exposed to a potentially exhausting trial. Samantha also got the court to award punitive damages and also got the judge to order that our legal fees had to be reimbursed by the relative who misappropriated the funds. Throughout the case Samantha kept us continually up to date with every development as it happened. On numerous occasions Samantha consulted directly with my aunt with showing great patience, love and respect to her, even though my 82 year old aunt can be a handful. Samantha went above and beyond all our expectations. If you ever find yourself in need of an elder care specialist, Samantha Fredieu and Hale Ball law firm is the place to go.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
