Sarah is a spot on attorney who will fight for you but not take your lies. Be honest with her on everything and she will go to the mat with the best of them and win. She has been nothing but thoughtful and without her I would not be able to see my daughter. I cannot recommend her enough! If you are looking for an honest attorney who will be a straight shooter - Sarah is the one. She wil guide you through this very difficult process and be honest with you and tell you the truth on both your behvaior and chances. Divorce is difficult and we tend to act out as human beings. She will do her best to keep you in line for your best chances - just listen and follow. I trust Sarah with my child - that should say it all!

From the moment I had my initial consultation with Ms. Jamel Rowe, I knew I had found the right attorney. I was incredibly nervous and felt ashamed about having to go through this process, but Jamel put me at ease immediately. She created a safe, non-judgmental space where I felt comfortable opening up. Jamel’s reputation as a "bulldog" in the courtroom was exactly what I needed. She is the epitome of professionalism, expertise, and skill, and I truly can't praise her enough. Her paralegal, Ms. Julia Brice, was consistently on top of everything, ensuring that things got done efficiently and effectively. I also had the pleasure of working closely with Mr. Carl Chandler, who was nothing short of outstanding. He is an exceptional attorney and a pleasure to collaborate with. Both Jamel and Carl fought tirelessly on my behalf, securing exactly what I was hoping for. I will always be grateful to them. I must also mention Ms. Kathy at the front desk, who brightened my day each time I called or came into the office. I wholeheartedly recommend Livesay & Myers, PC – they are an incredible team!

Alex Laufer took my case and represented me throughout a long and challenging insurance settlement following a vehicle accident that caused me irreparable injury and chronic pain. He worked the case with determination and resourceful strategy and obtained a settlement that was fair to all parties. Most important to me, he obtained that result with unquestionable integrity, and without causing animosity or ill will with the insurance companies and parties involved. When the case was concluded, everyone walked away from the experience with the sense that it was a routine business transaction. If I ever need a lawyer again, I will not hesitate to call Alex or his law firm for help.

Alex Laufer is a great attorney for many of your legal needs. I have used him for many areas dealing with real estate, real estate settlements, contracts and general business issues. I have referred many clients, both business and personal) to him and his firm and in each instance he was able to help the client or myself in regard to our legal needs.

Mr. Laufar not only approached the case as requested, he also introduced other variables that resulted in a larger award. He explained parts of the law that we were not aware of at the time. Had we gone to Mr. Laufar 6 months earlier, we would have had a much larger award than obtained at the end of the case. If any follow-up work is required, we will definitely go back to Mr. Laufar and we do recommend him for any legal action.

John is an exceptional attorney who completely exceeded all of my expectations. He is very personable and was attentive to all of my emails, questions and concerns. He fought diligently for me and gave me the absolute best outcome possible in a court room. At no point did I feel like just another client. I had a fantastic experience with John and he would hands down be the very first attorney that I would recommend to anyone seeking counsel.

Contrary to what many people think, all lawyers are not out for just winning. While this is the main goal, of course, Mr. Smith not only pressed to win and did a great job of handling my case- he genuinely cared about me and the outcome of this very painful and delicate case.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
