Mr. MacDowell, Mr. Patel and his team have guided us during daunting experience when my husband was in a very bad car accident. Their professionalism and transparency was very greatly appreciated. They stayed in communication with us at all times and sent us reminders as to which stage of the process we were in.

Mr. Richard MacDowell is a very competent and experienced attorney. He is also a former prosecutor and knows his way around the legal system well. He knows his stuff. I was recently charged with a DWI but with Mr. MacDowell's representation and guidance, was able to get it dismissed in the court. And his office does an excellent job of keeping you updated about your case and everyone on his team is pleasure to work with. Very glad I was referred to MacDowell Law Group.

Our family had a difficult real estate transaction involving uncooperative relatives and a challenging buyer. Samantha did an incredible job getting the sale across the finish line with successful results. She was extremely responsive, always available and courteous. Samantha was able to work through additional obstacles with my being out-of-state. We highly recommend Samantha and wouldn't hesitate to use her again for any legal matters.

My disabled son is turning 18. Ms. Fredieu assisted my wife and I with the guardianship proceedings. In our first meeting she clearly laid out what information she needed from us. once the information was provided she just took care of the rest; all we had to do was show up in court. She took the anxiety out of what could have been a complicated legal mess. To top it off the legal fees came in under budget. I could not be more pleased.

At the beginning of 2016 my aunt, who was living in an assisted living facility, was getting very frustrated with a relative who was handling her funds but not providing any accounting of her assets. Not knowing how to proceed to help my aunt, I asked the facility where she resides for a recommendation of an attorney who might have experience in a situation like ours. They recommended Hale Ball and we are so happy they did. After an initial consultation with my aunt and I, lawyer Samantha Fredieu gave us a plan on how to try and get an accounting of the assets. Thanks to Samantha’s quick actions, we immediately gained control of my aunt’s assets but discovered our worst fears; the relative had misappropriated a large sum of money from my aunt. Samantha suggested ( and we agreed) to file a lawsuit to recover the funds. Samantha guided us through all of our choices, explaining in detail which venue was better for our case, state or federal court. After carefully weighing all our options with Samantha, we chose to file our lawsuit in Virginia federal court. Samantha and her firm jumped right into the case and quickly filed an action. Samantha litigated very professionally and always worked with us to keep expenses as low as possible. The relative fought back hard and made the case unnecessarily complicated, but Samantha and her firm thwarted every attempt by the relative to try to get the case dismissed. After a year of very hard work and multiple appearances before the judge, we won our case with summary judgment and not having to go to trial. We succeeded at every level we had hoped and thanks to Samantha’s efforts, we didn’t have to have my aunt exposed to a potentially exhausting trial. Samantha also got the court to award punitive damages and also got the judge to order that our legal fees had to be reimbursed by the relative who misappropriated the funds. Throughout the case Samantha kept us continually up to date with every development as it happened. On numerous occasions Samantha consulted directly with my aunt with showing great patience, love and respect to her, even though my 82 year old aunt can be a handful. Samantha went above and beyond all our expectations. If you ever find yourself in need of an elder care specialist, Samantha Fredieu and Hale Ball law firm is the place to go.

I was between a rock a hard place and had to seek help in very short order, or I would lose my home to unfortunately circumstances. When I found Brian's information, I picked up the phone, on a whim, and assumed that I'd be leaving a voicemail and then waiting for days to hear back, as time was ticking away. I believe it was a weekend evening; phone started to ring and he answered right away! I was completely unprepared, but midst being very emotional and almost crying, I tried to explain my situation. He listened, he asked key questions, he seemed empathetic and he calmed me down by providing a few possible solutions. I hung up the phone feeling entirely different and relieved. From that point on we communicated by text message and a few phone calls, and he never missed a beat. He was immediately responsive, frank, to the point and ready to clarify my clueless questions. Long story short, he was able to stop a foreclosure within 24 hours. He then continued to guide me forward in solving my issues in a timely manner and closing that chapter of life. All of this was done without even meeting face to face (Covid). If only other professionals could take a note in being responsive, frank, blunt and effective as Brian, I'm sure many aspects of life would be far better than they are, for many. My family and I full heartedly recommend Brian's services.

My wife and I recently filed for bankruptcy. We met Brian who immediately let us know all the material he would need to proceed and information he would need to determine we could keep our house and car. He was available always to answer all questions even from our kids. He is professional and personable. knows his craft. We would recommend him to all.

It was one fateful Friday evening when I reached out to Brian if he can help me save my house from the auction block on a Monday five years ago. His reply, 'sure I can if you do what I tell you'. People, take that important first step and call him. He talked with me in conversational words not loaded with legalese. At the end of that first call, I knew I had finally arrived at the solution that I was looking for. Through out the years, Brian was there to help me out with my case. Always courteous and professional. Needless to say he is extremely knowledgeable. I wholeheartedly recommend him with 10 stars (except the limit here is 5). Take that first step and reach out to him with your case.

Andi Geloo is an outstanding and top-notch lawyer. I could not have made a better decision hiring her. She aims for the stars trying to get the best possible outcome for you, and she delivers. She made it look easy reducing a reckless driving ticket down to a non-moving violation especially after seeing other lawyers go before her who failed to achieve such a great outcome with similar cases. She is also extremely compassionate, kind, approachable, and always available and she constantly checked in to make sure everything was ok and that any questions/concerns I had were addressed fully. She is my first recommendation for anyone needing legal help.

Andi Geloo is an exceptional lawyer, and my experience with her surpassed all expectations. From the outset, Andi's warm and empathetic demeanor immediately reassured me. Throughout our correspondence via email and a Saturday phone call dedicated to addressing my concerns, she consistently demonstrated her dedication to my case. Andi not only answered every query I had thoroughly and comprehensively but also went above and beyond by providing additional insights and suggestions to bolster my case. Upon hiring her, her responsiveness remained unparalleled, leaving me with no lingering doubts or uncertainties. Leading up to the court date, I meticulously followed her guidance, and on the day of the hearing, she was there as promised, offering unwavering support. In the end, Andi achieved an outcome that far exceeded my expectations. Reflecting back, it's still surreal to comprehend that she got my reckless speeding over 85 mph down to a non-moving violation and zero point offense. I am immensely grateful for Andi's expertise, professionalism, and genuine care throughout this process. Without hesitation, I highly recommend her services to anyone in need of legal representation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fairfax, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
