After my daughter received what we believed to be an inappropriate out-of-state domicile / tuition decision from George Mason University, I began my search for an attorney who could assist us with an appeal. Google searches brought me to Zach Miller of McClanahan Powers, PLLC who had experience litigating against GMU related to domicile determination. Thank you Google! During our consultation Zach walked my daughter & me through the complicated regulations which guide domicile determination for the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a result we came to a significantly better understanding of how our appeal should be structured. Zach also reviewed our appeal memo and supporting documents and made significant recommendations on modifications which better explained the facts at hand. I am thrilled to share that 30 days after our first appeal was filed we received notification from GMU that they had found in our favor and my daughter was indeed determined to be domiciled in the state of Virginia and therefore entitled to pay in-state tuition rates. After experiencing a very difficult personal situation I wasn't sure what to do or what my legal options were. After speaking with a few other attorneys I came across Mr. McClanahan. Not only did he clearly explain my legal options in laymans terms establishing a clear understanding of each, he also gave me in-depth understanding of the ramifications each choice might have. He was professional while remaining friendly and attentative, often times attorneys can be pushy or confusing-- Mr. McClanahan was none of that.
