We've been through our fair share of litigation in the 13 years since my husband's divorce from his ex-wife. Sarah Patras stands out as the best attorney we have ever dealt with in Northern Virginia. She is professional, fast and very knowledgable of family law. I would not hesitate at all to recommend her. She got everything we needed done as quickly as possible and with an outcome we were happy with.

This law firm never stops working for you. Sarah Patras was our attorney in a Family case where a lot of paperwork was involved and a lot of serious issues and inaccurate information needed to be addressed. Ms. Patras was optimistic from the beginning and gave us the confidence to move forward even when some other issues came up. Their para legal Ashley Constant was always available even when Ms. Patras was tied up and they both stayed in constant communication throughout the entire ordeal. I could not be happier with the representation of Ms. Patras or the assistance of Ms. Constant. If you have a family law case you could not ask for a better fighter to stand up for you in court or with DSS. Livesay and Myers will truly fight to win your case and keep in contact every step of the way. This is a law firm you can trust. Thank you Sarah and Ashley and thank you Livesay and Myers.

I hired Sarah Patras in regards to a Property Settlement and Custody Agreement, as well as my divorce. Sarah, as well as paralegal Ashley Constant did a fantastic job! They were both very easy to get in contact with, whether by phone or email, always answered my questions thoroughly, and assisted greatly in getting my divorce finalized in a timely manner. I highly recommend both of them!

I hired attorney Emily Smith for my personal injury. I had fallen at a business property and sustained serious injuries and a mounting amount of medical bills. Emily was a great communicator and I never felt like just another case to her. She left no stones unturned while handling my case. She was assertive and persistent to the very end. I hired an attorney and acquired so much more! Emily and those who work alongside her are kind, good, and caring people who I will always be thankful for! I would hire her again and I would refer her to anyone needing a personal injury attorney!

I can’t thank Ms Connolly enough for the hard work she put forth to get me child support. She was unable to be there at my court hearing but had matters resolved before I headed into court. If it weren’t for her I would still be fighting to get child support. I am thankful beyond words for her representing me.

Lindsay provided exceptional service after taking over my divorce case. My anxiety was eased after our very first meeting where she reviewed previous actions accomplished and we coordinated the way ahead. Her paralegal, Matthew Hall, was key in ensuring documents were completed, filed, and I was updated on progress. I am extremely pleased with the results of my case.

I hired Lindsay for a divorce case, and a protective order case. I was in a really bad place when I came to Lindsay I was fighting false allegations of family abuse. She was able to help me through my divorce retaining my visitation rights and got the protective order dismissed. I really thought things were hopeless but after working with her she was able to show the courts what was really going on. She was always mindful of what she was billing me and tried to save me money where she could. She underpromised and over delivered every time. If your going through a divorce hire her.

Jasmine represented me in a custody case regarding my 12 year old where his father was requesting a drastic change in the visitation we have had for most of my son’s lie. I had a lot of anxiety surrounding this process and felt very uneducated and unprepared. Jasmine put my mind at ease from the beginning and guided me each step of the way to help me feel as prepared as possible. I had a lot of questions and she took time to answer each one. She did an excellent job advocating for me and my son and presenting my case to show the drastic change being requested would be detrimental to my son. In the end, our custody and visitation remained the same. If I ever find myself in this situation again, she will be my first phone call!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
