If you're seeking reliable legal support in a child custody matter, Livesay & Myers LLP is a solid choice. They are super nice and friendly. I don't think I could've made a better choice.

My fiancé and I had the pleasure of working with Livesay & Myers, I had Sarah as my lawyer and Sunny as my paralegal. we started working with Sarah in the beginning of the 2023 till now, from our consultation, all the way till now we have nothing but amazing things to say, Sarah is so sweet and understanding, she is very calm and listens to everything you have to say, she gives you great advice on how to handle everything and how to speak and document. Sunny is so down to earth, always there to answer my calls or emails. When Sarah was busy, she was quick to answer and replay back with great advice, My ex-husband gave us a big run around and we all were very frustrated and Sarah and Sunny made sure I was very calm and collected. Neither Sarah nor Sunny gave up on us esp. with what we thought was best for the kids. I will continue to stay in touch and keep them updated with how my 2 older children are doing. The front desk is Sheree and when she answers the calls her voice is so sweet and kind. I loved talking to her, she just puts a smile on your face when arriving to the office. I don't think of them as a lawyer, I now think of them as family. They made our family complete. We can't thank them enough for everything they have done for us.

I hired Sarah Patras to help me with a custody and child support matter. I am so glad that I did. Sarah and her paralegal, Sunny Reneau, worked closely with me and made sure that I was informed of every option along the way as well as possible outcomes. My experience with other attorneys before Sarah were very poor and they never took my case seriously. Sarah was so prepared and knew every detail of my case. I can't thank her enough.

How do you find the words to describe the worth of your quality of life? The worth of your children’s future and best interest? The worth of less conflict and stress? The worth of your safety, sleep, time, and financial means? Divorce and custody matters can be life altering. One choice can greatly change the course and outcome. Making the right choices are difficult when you are scared, vulnerable, or facing the complex issues that are common during a family law matters. I can’t thank Ms Connolly enough for the hard work she put forth to get me child support. She was unable to be there at my court hearing but had matters resolved before I headed into court. If it weren’t for her I would still be fighting to get child support. I am thankful beyond words for her representing me.

Lindsay provided exceptional service after taking over my divorce case. My anxiety was eased after our very first meeting where she reviewed previous actions accomplished and we coordinated the way ahead. Her paralegal, Matthew Hall, was key in ensuring documents were completed, filed, and I was updated on progress. I am extremely pleased with the results of my case.

I hired Lindsay for a divorce case, and a protective order case. I was in a really bad place when I came to Lindsay I was fighting false allegations of family abuse. She was able to help me through my divorce retaining my visitation rights and got the protective order dismissed. I really thought things were hopeless but after working with her she was able to show the courts what was really going on. She was always mindful of what she was billing me and tried to save me money where she could. She underpromised and over delivered every time. If your going through a divorce hire her.

Jasmine represented me in a custody case regarding my 12 year old where his father was requesting a drastic change in the visitation we have had for most of my son’s lie. I had a lot of anxiety surrounding this process and felt very uneducated and unprepared. Jasmine put my mind at ease from the beginning and guided me each step of the way to help me feel as prepared as possible. I had a lot of questions and she took time to answer each one. She did an excellent job advocating for me and my son and presenting my case to show the drastic change being requested would be detrimental to my son. In the end, our custody and visitation remained the same. If I ever find myself in this situation again, she will be my first phone call!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
