I cannot say enough good things about this law firm. I used them for a house closing and they were quick and thorough. Angie was so friendly. I also used them for my grandson's speeding ticket. Mr. Bowman was able to provide a good result. I highly recommend this law firm.

I received a speeding ticket 4 1/2hrs from my house, called 3 lawyers in their area and he responded quickly and gave me the best price. He went to court for me and got my speeding ticket reduced to a non moving violation so my insurance wouldnt increase. They emailed me right after court with where I needed to send my ticket payment. I was extremely pleased with their service and it kept me from driving all the way back to VA for court!!

Worked with Tom on a small manner...His communication and constant follow-up was phenomenal. Everything was settled to my satisfaction - as he promised. Joy to work with and would use him again in the future.

Tom Jackson was great to work with. After inquiring on his web site regarding a speeding violation (we are from out of state), he called to get details and put together a plan. We did not have to appear in court and Tom reached back out to me the same day after resolving this on our behalf. I highly recommend if needed.

Jonathan McGrady represented me in a reckless driving offense. We spoke and I explained the citation and the circumstances. Mr. McGrady asked questions, understood my situation and then fully explained my options. His staff is extremely professional. Their communication was clear and concise, left nothing in question. I was able to communicate by email and phone. Not a call or question went unanswered. Being from a different state, I was afraid location was going to be an issue. His staff made me fill like they were right next door. Mr. McGrady and his staff took this negative experience and were able to put a positive light on the outcome and the process..... I would highly recommend Mr. McGrady as legal representation. Hopefully, I never have to use him again, but if I find myself in a similar situation, I know who to call.

I'm an attorney in Georgia, so when my college-aged son received a (super-speeder, as we call it in Georgia) speeding ticket coming back from visiting a friend at V.T., I did some research and felt like Ms. Boyer would be the right fit to represent him. From start to finish, Ms. Boyer was professional, patient with me as mom, and very clear with expectations. She negotiated his ticket down to a non-moving violation without my son having to go back to Virginia, which was a far better result than I ever could have hoped for. I absolutely would recommend Ms. Boyer to anyone looking for competent, excellent representation.

My girlfriend and I are from Illinois. My girlfriend was cited for reckless driving by the Hillsville Police Department. Her and I were a nervous wreck after she was charged. We picked Karen Boyer to represent us, based on her Avvo rating, and the comments people made about her level of legal service. I can certify that the comments are true, and she exceeded our expectations, and represented my girlfriend with pure competence, compassion, and legal talent. She also calmed our fears with patience and kindness. She put together a magnificent mitigation package, and got the reckless driving charge reduced to an equipment violation.... partly because it was my girlfriends first traffic ticket ever. I cannot say enough good things about Karen Boyer

I spoke with several other local attorneys before deciding to retain Andrea and am so glad I went with this firm. She was knowledgeable, professional, and empathetic as I navigated the channels of a complicated divorce. I am pleased with my outcome and recommend this firm to anyone facing the dissolution of your marriage.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsville, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
