Mr. Connors is affable and quite knowledgeable about the law. His firm is small. Which turned out to be a deficit in my case as he was easily overwhelmed by the “big boys” of opposing counsel’s firm. As a consequence, The legal fees quickly spiraled out of control and greatly exceeded the budget and the end result was not as good as I had hoped.

William Conners represented me as defense counsel in a contentious family law case against an aggressive Fairfax attorney and an even more aggressive, litigious, and vindictive ex-spouse. This review is meant to be helpful for prospective clients, so here is my candid assessment of what you will get with Mr. Conners: - A top notch legal professional who is about as knowledgeable about family law as I've ever seen. Anywhere. - He will take your case very seriously; he will sit with you to formulate the most effective legal strategy and he will be direct and honest about setting realistic expectations. - He is one of the most efficient attorney's out there; he will work on preparing your case professionally and coherently. - He is passionate about the law and his profession: He cares about your case as if it's his own. - Unlike many lawyers out there, he is not out to run up the hours and drain your wallet. - His level of preparation before trial is superb. Going to trial is always stressful, but you go into trial feeling confident knowing that you have an attorney who is thoroughly prepared for your case and positioned to win. - He's is very responsive; unless he's tied up in court he responds to emails within hours (or less). In the court room: - At trial, he's focused on one thing and one thing only: Winning your case. - He has absolute command of the court room and respect of the judge. - I was absolutely astounded by the professionalism and court room acumen demonstrated by Mr. Conners at my trial. - His vast knowledge of the family law enables him to make very succinct and clear legal arguments in support of his client's case. - His vast knowledge of family law also enables him to effectively discredit opposing counsel's arguments that are not based on fact or law. - His cross-examination of witnesses is on-point and quickly exposes their weaknesses. - Like a legal maestro, his delivery of arguments is articulate, factual, and convincing. Summary: If you have a challenging family law case and you are looking for the best family attorney you can get, Mr. Conners has certainly earned that tile.

Mr. Conners was professional, extremely knowledgeable, compassionate and highly ethical during my complicated divorce/child support proceedings. His assertive demeanor in the courtroom allowed us to resolve issues quickly. He really understands the complications of an emotional divorce and knows just how the nuances of the law applied to my unique situation, and, as a result, was able to cut off most of the game playing by opposing counsel. It was inspiring to see him standing firm on my behalf and negotiating a very equitable settlement for my family. I highly recommend Mr. Conners to anyone who needs an attorney, no matter how complicated the situation.

When I was facing serious felony charges I met with quite a few lawyers in Northern VA before deciding on Peter Schwartz. No other attorney actually believed me to be innocent. They were willing to take the case and defend me, but I wouldn't dare hire a professional who says to my face and in front of my mother that I am a criminal. Peter was the exception. From the first time we spoke I knew he had a genuine interest in helping me, I knew that he trusted me. I had already been in jail for several days, knowing Peter would be defending me (for the right reasons) was just such an overwhelming relief. When we finally got to the courtroom, Peter was able to prove my innocence to a Fairfax County Judge. Beyond that the party responsible for filing the charges against me admitted to guilt and confirmed the story I had been telling from the start was true. Peter believed me and fought for me when no one else would. He was always courteous and professional in and outside of the courtroom. Because of this, Peter has and will be my attorney for as long as he practises law.

My husband and I hired Mr. Sweeny in December 2011 to handle his worker's comp case. We had been referred to him by another local attorney and saw that he had rave reviews online. Needless to say, even with all the good things we had already heard about him, he exceeded our already high expectations. Mr. Sweeny was extremely professional and courteous and always took the time to answer all our questions - even if we asked the same questions again and again. He always made time for our emails, calls and office visits. Most importantly though his thorough knowledge of the state's worker's comp system and his handling of my husband's case was the key to us avoiding years of medical debt. Mr. Sweeny was the reason - we firmly believe - that my husband won his case. He truly cares about his clients and seeking justice on their behalf and we were so fortunate to have found him. Justice does not always prevail but it always helps to have the best attorney in your corner. We are very lucky to say we had both. I strongly urge any Virginians pursuing a worker's comp claim to hire Mr. Sweeny. You wont regret you did!

When I/we went thru a previous Workmens Comp. injury for my husband with a local lawyer, we were severely disappointed and dismayed. My Husband will never re-cover and never received any compensation. After his bitter recollection, I put my foot down and said I was going to follow through. He was not a believer! After engaging and hiring Mr. Sweeney, life was restored. My husband has a new respect for lawyers and I just wish I hired him earlier. Mr. Sweeney kept me informed every step of the way, either by mail or phone and he setteled my case. I wish I had him earlier in my corner!!!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Leesburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
