Marissa and team guided me through the administration of my mother’s will and trust. They were extremely clear and thorough in their instruction through out the process. Further and just as importantly, Marissa did a wonderful job helping managing all the anxiety and angst that comes with this type of life event. I couldn't recommend them more highly!

Highly Recommend! Everyone from the front desk to each of the attorneys is professional, discrete, & friendly at Troxell Leigh. Kevin Daniel & Gareth were unbelievably helpful, patient, and very professional during the months I worked with them. Both were well-informed and gave me helpful direction.

Going through a divorce and a custody situation can be a daunting, complicated, and emotionally draining process. You need someone by your side to help you navigate the complexities, provide you with the necessary guidance and most importantly be as invested in fighting for your rights as if they were their own. With Mr. Benjamin Fitzgerald at SSHW you are truly “in good hands.” He is everything you would want to have in someone representing your interests. His reassuring compassion and empathy will put your mind at ease in trying times and his knowledge, professionalism, and direct approach, both inside and outside the courtroom will ensure that you achieve the best possible outcomes. I was at a really bad place when I first called him on a late Thursday evening, he took the time to understand the situation and by the time I met him, first thing on Friday morning, the next day, he had already worked out and set a plan in motion. What I had expected would take at least a week or two, was achieved within an evening. I cannot really express in words how his sharpness and responsiveness during this time salvaged an impossible situation and reassured my trust in our justice system. This was however just the beginning, our contentious divorce and custody battle would continue for well over 2 years, but with Ben ‘s help and guidance, I always felt at-ease and reassured. His preparation and advice were always through, complete and ethical as was the entire team at SSHW. During this time there were several motions, countermotions, depositions, settlements and court appearances and I was always amazed with his knowledge about my case and his level of preparation and commitment for my cause. I am forever grateful for his guidance and advice during those challenging times, I believe and know that with SSHW and Ben Fitzgerald, not only did I get the best possible representation, but I also received the best possible outcome.

I worked with Ben Fitzgerald (and other relevant SSH&W staff) on my custody case and was very pleased with the amount of attention, detail and overall due diligence he and his staff gave my case. I felt that every hour that I was billed had been packed with hard work from Ben's side. This ultimately resulted in a very favorable outcome for me. I highly recommend Ben and his associates at SSH&W

If I could give 10 stars, I would! Penn Bain is an amazing attorney who helped me resolve a quite challenging family law case with a favorable outcome. From the start, his approach to my case was underpinned by a high level of integrity, transparency, compassion, and legal prowess that is unmatched. My only regret is not finding him sooner. In addition, every interaction I have had with his team has been pleasant, respectful, and prompt. If you want a strong, skilled, and knowledgeable attorney who will effectively advise and represent you, without question, you should select Penn Bain. Sevila, Saunders, Huddleston & White is undoubtedly a top-notch firm.

Mr. Valine provided us with excellent advice on the founding of our corporation and our non-profit corporation. He thoroughly explained what needed to be done, walked with us through each step, and answered all of our questions in a timely manner. I would certainly consult with him again for our business and non-profit needs.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Leesburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
