When what should have been an uncomplicated divorce turned into a three ringed circus, I was very fortunate to have Alan Bowden as my council. From the onset he was caring, kind, upfront, plain spoken yet obviously very intelligent. There was never a moment I doubted his strategy or advice. During the court hearings he was very well prepared, professional, articulate and to the point, unlike the paper shuffling, mumbling and redundant questions from the opposition. Alan kept it simple, no mud slinging and classy. On top of Alan's apparent love for the law, justice and giving his client 100% , he is also a very nice guy and a pleasure to be around, even in difficult circumstances. I couldn't offer a higher recommendation!

Alan was both upfront and all-business as well as supportive and kind during my divorce. He made sure I received an equitable outcome and helped me to think through key decision points. He was also very empathetic, which in the tough moments really helped. I can’t recommend him strongly enough.

I hired Alan in 2014, to represent me through my divorce proceedings. From the beginning and our first meeting, Alan was up front with the procedures involved and the expected outcomes and costs of representation as they related to my case. I was in a difficult situation and Alan was the exact type of attorney I needed. He was not afraid to put me in my place if I was getting ahead of myself, as this is easy to do when faced with a difficult situation such as divorce. He is a leader and instills confidence that the decisions being made are the right ones. I believe Alan's past experience in Litigation puts him a step above the rest when it comes to family law, as I have seen him in action and to say he prepared is an understatement. I would almost swear that the opposing attorney, not to be named, but from a very "powerful" and reputable firm, almost cried during our first hearing. It was as if he had lived the exact moment before and had the right answer for every question. The ability to prepare properly is a powerful tool and Alan has this, perfected from what I have seen. The trait that impressed me most about Alan was his character and his heart. Alan represented my case with the utmost integrity and with such feeling for what I needed and wanted. I had discussed with him from day 1, that I wanted to be the bigger person and do the right thing. I did not want to stray from this course of action, and in law, I have found, others will lie, cheat and steal to get the outcome they want. Alan, not only took my feelings into consideration, he found a way to achieve our goal without going outside the lines. It is hard to express in words, how much Alan has helped me through the most difficult time of my life. How much appreciation I have that, he is not only my attorney, but a friend, who genuinely wants to be there for me. Side note: Alan also represented my company prior asking him to represent me as I dealt with my family law issues. His knowledge of business law, helped me through a number of tough business decisions. A tip of the cap, once again.

Elena had a short period of time to get familiar with my case. She made sure to understand my position and concerns and overall wanted to do what would provide me the piece of mind that I so desperately needed. When we walked in to the court you could tell that people know who she is, she is well respected and liked. All attributes that you want an attorney to have.

Mr. Colombo is worth every penny he charges. We met during COVID, which means we actually never met in person, and that is the reason why I didn't say, "he's worth his weight in gold" ... I've never seen him so I don't know what he looks like ... what if he's skinny, the "worth his weight in gold" wouldn't do him justice! I'm a one-woman, small shop contractor and one of my clients decided not to pay me. Mr. Colombo took on my case for half of what others had quoted me and he came through, all the way. He took the time to listen to me, he responded to my emails during off hours and called me when only workaholics like he and I would place/take calls. He's accessible, personable, thorough and good. I never had to nudge him, he was always on top of my case and I'm very aware that while my issue was big to me, it was small peanuts to him. Nevertheless, he always made me feel like I was his top client. Seriously. That's a rare find. I'm a very happy camper and I will sing his praises to the moon and back. Yes, I'd hire him again in a heart beat but, trust me, I hope I never have to!!!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Leesburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
