Out of the year he represented me, we spoke once. He had a continuous amount of excuses of why he missed meetings with myself and opposing counsel.

Do not expect Mr. Robl to keep track of the time he has worked on your case, or to provide you with accurate information. Ask him every time you speak to him how many hours you have left on your retainer, and make sure it matches your records. In my case, Mr. Robl informed me that I still had money left on my retainer, but would need to provide him with additional money soon. I advised him that I did not have any additional money and therefore I needed to settle my case (which I did immediately). Shortly thereafter, I received a bill for a very large amount of money. When I reached out to Mr. Robl to clear up these charges, he explained that the information he had previously provided was not accurate. I was upset to hear it, and didn't have the money he was now saying that I owed him. I went back to check all of my records, and still did not come up with the hours he was claiming to have worked on my case. When I called him back in attempt to work something out, he would not answer. I left multiple messages. He refused all of my phone calls and emails, and never responded to me again. Rather than speak to me, someone he was representing, he SUED me, resulting in a judgement. Adding insult to injury, he actually included his legal fees (not just costs) for representing himself in the lawsuit! Please be very cautious when considering Mr. Robl to represent you. I've never felt so wronged before in my life, and would hate for anyone else to go through what I did.

Mr. Robl represented me in an Automobile Accident Case. His knowledge & experience helped guide me through the process. He explained all the complex legal terms in clear, easy to understand language. In the end Mr. Robl was able to negotiate a settlement that resulted in the maximum amount of recoverable. T.L.

“I am an attorney who has recently used the legal services of Thomas J. Robl, Esquire. I was involved in a car accident where the other driver swerved into my lane causing me to swerve out of the way to avoid being hit. When I swerved, I hit the gravel on the side of the road and my car bounced off the guard rail and then the other car causing me to spin out of control onto the median. The insurance company for the other driver said that they were not going to pay me for my injuries because the other driver did not originally hit me. They tried to claim that the accident was my fault. That is when I hired Mr. Robl. He was very professional, tenacious, knowledgeable, and patient. Even though I am an attorney, this was not my area of expertise. Mr. Robl took the time to explain to me all of my options and case strategy in a very logical and practical way. I felt like he really cared about me as a person and that I was not just another case. He worked very hard on my behalf for quite a few months. I am sure he could have “settled” my case for much less and closed out the case earlier, but he believed in the merits of the case and refused to take what some would have considered the easy way out. Through his hard work, he convinced the insurance company representative that the other driver was in fact at fault. He was able to negotiate a very nice settlement for me by demonstrating that he was prepared to take my case to trial. I am very happy that I hired Thomas J. Robl, Esquire to help me in this matter, and I highly recommend him to other individuals that need legal services”

Going through a divorce and a custody situation can be a daunting, complicated, and emotionally draining process. You need someone by your side to help you navigate the complexities, provide you with the necessary guidance and most importantly be as invested in fighting for your rights as if they were their own. With Mr. Benjamin Fitzgerald at SSHW you are truly “in good hands.” He is everything you would want to have in someone representing your interests. His reassuring compassion and empathy will put your mind at ease in trying times and his knowledge, professionalism, and direct approach, both inside and outside the courtroom will ensure that you achieve the best possible outcomes. I was at a really bad place when I first called him on a late Thursday evening, he took the time to understand the situation and by the time I met him, first thing on Friday morning, the next day, he had already worked out and set a plan in motion. What I had expected would take at least a week or two, was achieved within an evening. I cannot really express in words how his sharpness and responsiveness during this time salvaged an impossible situation and reassured my trust in our justice system. This was however just the beginning, our contentious divorce and custody battle would continue for well over 2 years, but with Ben ‘s help and guidance, I always felt at-ease and reassured. His preparation and advice were always through, complete and ethical as was the entire team at SSHW. During this time there were several motions, countermotions, depositions, settlements and court appearances and I was always amazed with his knowledge about my case and his level of preparation and commitment for my cause. I am forever grateful for his guidance and advice during those challenging times, I believe and know that with SSHW and Ben Fitzgerald, not only did I get the best possible representation, but I also received the best possible outcome.

I worked with Ben Fitzgerald (and other relevant SSH&W staff) on my custody case and was very pleased with the amount of attention, detail and overall due diligence he and his staff gave my case. I felt that every hour that I was billed had been packed with hard work from Ben's side. This ultimately resulted in a very favorable outcome for me. I highly recommend Ben and his associates at SSH&W

If I could give 10 stars, I would! Penn Bain is an amazing attorney who helped me resolve a quite challenging family law case with a favorable outcome. From the start, his approach to my case was underpinned by a high level of integrity, transparency, compassion, and legal prowess that is unmatched. My only regret is not finding him sooner. In addition, every interaction I have had with his team has been pleasant, respectful, and prompt. If you want a strong, skilled, and knowledgeable attorney who will effectively advise and represent you, without question, you should select Penn Bain. Sevila, Saunders, Huddleston & White is undoubtedly a top-notch firm.

My husband and I hired Mr. Sweeny in December 2011 to handle his worker's comp case. We had been referred to him by another local attorney and saw that he had rave reviews online. Needless to say, even with all the good things we had already heard about him, he exceeded our already high expectations. Mr. Sweeny was extremely professional and courteous and always took the time to answer all our questions - even if we asked the same questions again and again. He always made time for our emails, calls and office visits. Most importantly though his thorough knowledge of the state's worker's comp system and his handling of my husband's case was the key to us avoiding years of medical debt. Mr. Sweeny was the reason - we firmly believe - that my husband won his case. He truly cares about his clients and seeking justice on their behalf and we were so fortunate to have found him. Justice does not always prevail but it always helps to have the best attorney in your corner. We are very lucky to say we had both. I strongly urge any Virginians pursuing a worker's comp claim to hire Mr. Sweeny. You wont regret you did!

When I/we went thru a previous Workmens Comp. injury for my husband with a local lawyer, we were severely disappointed and dismayed. My Husband will never re-cover and never received any compensation. After his bitter recollection, I put my foot down and said I was going to follow through. He was not a believer! After engaging and hiring Mr. Sweeney, life was restored. My husband has a new respect for lawyers and I just wish I hired him earlier. Mr. Sweeney kept me informed every step of the way, either by mail or phone and he setteled my case. I wish I had him earlier in my corner!!!

When I was facing serious felony charges I met with quite a few lawyers in Northern VA before deciding on Peter Schwartz. No other attorney actually believed me to be innocent. They were willing to take the case and defend me, but I wouldn't dare hire a professional who says to my face and in front of my mother that I am a criminal. Peter was the exception. From the first time we spoke I knew he had a genuine interest in helping me, I knew that he trusted me. I had already been in jail for several days, knowing Peter would be defending me (for the right reasons) was just such an overwhelming relief. When we finally got to the courtroom, Peter was able to prove my innocence to a Fairfax County Judge. Beyond that the party responsible for filing the charges against me admitted to guilt and confirmed the story I had been telling from the start was true. Peter believed me and fought for me when no one else would. He was always courteous and professional in and outside of the courtroom. Because of this, Peter has and will be my attorney for as long as he practises law.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Leesburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
