Dave Honadle has represented my former company for over ten years (his firm Vanderpool, Frostick & Nishanian has represented the company for a lot longer than that), the majority of the work being related to landlord/tenant. matters. Dave is knowledgeable and reliable. When one of the properties was placed in to redevelopment mode, Dave was instrumental in the termination of leases and the removal of holdover tenants. Even though our relationship focused mainly on landlord/tenant issues, Dave is proactive in forwarding information that may be important to the company doing business in the State of Virginia. I would not hesitate recommending Dave as a lawyer.

Don is a straight talker. He is the kind of attorney that you want in your corner. I appreciated Don's style a lot and I wish I could have hired him. In my situation, we could not reach an agreement on the fees. If that were not an issue, then Don is the person to get results. You definitely do not want him as an opposing counsel.

Don Daugherty is definitely the best lawyer, hands down! I am over joyed with the outcome of my custody case. I went through a very difficult period in my life, when the father of my child attempted to gain full custody of our son. After hiring Mr. Daugherty for legal representation, things instantly changed and I felt an immediate sense of relief. No nonsense, straight talk, tell it like it is, was totally honest about the case throughout the entire ordeal. He taught me how to understand the system and how to testify in such a way to get the information out that is being requested during direct and cross-examination. He taught me how to properly present myself in the best light and to not fear the other side. Best of all, Mr. Daugherty and his entire law firm will immediately make you feel as though you are part of their family and everyone is always readily available to give you quick and 100% accurate answers, no matter how big or small the question may be. Nothing matters to me more in life than my son, and all thanks is owed to Mr. Daugherty for helping me to win my custody case and remain the primary custodian of my child.

Vanessa and her team walked me through what was the most complicated circumstance of my life. When I shared the story of my circumstance, she asked many questions about home life behavior and immediately made recommendations to rule out other factors relevant to a divorce proceeding. The plan which was put in place uncovered information I was completely blind to and provided me the detail to begin the fight of my life... for my children. She was responsive, timely and thoughtful. I found it also valuable that she looped in other members of the firm to assist in answering questions regarding criminal actions to help me take make decisions on actions to take. I would recommend Vanessa to anyone who going through a difficult time in their marriage to better understand your legal rights. I was caught off guard, and Vanessa helped me get back on track to fight for what is right.

Being falsely accused and facing down the full power of the state of Virginia is daunting. David Daugherty however, is the best David against Goliath imaginable in this case. David earned my full trust the moment I sat down in his office, and solidified my belief as he saw my case through to a dismissal. Do not hesitate- if you need a lawyer that will fight for you, and will make good on their reputation of being a fighter, he is your man.

I was charged with a class 6 felony and a misdemeanor charge back in October 2018. The same day I was arrested 2 of my family members were arrested and received the same charges as me but we hired different lawyers. The lawyer they hired was only able to get one of the charges dropped while I got both dismissed thanks to David. He is the man!!

If you find yourself in a bad situation and need help getting out of trouble call David. I was charged with a class 2 felony (malicious wounding) facing 10 years in jail if convicted. He was able to work a deal and get me off with two misdemeanor charges. Which was the best outcome possible for my case. Don’t get offended if scolds you if you do something wrong because I did something stupid when I was on pre trial release. He just looking out for you he always responds and is helping me out again. If your looking for a good lawyer and have no way of beating the charge. He has ways of getting you the best ultimate outcome for your case. I have used the Daughtery law firm on three different occasions, so If your looking for the best law firm in Prince Willam look no farther call David. His prices are reasonable for what he can do for you.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Manassas, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
