Breakout Capital hired Doug in May 2017 after he served as external counsel helping the company secure its first credit facility. Since that time, Doug has negotiated an extension of that facility plus two additional credit facilities, led the diligence and negotiations on prospective M&A transactions, and served as a key member of the executive team, where his duties extend well beyond just legal. In addition to being extremely thoughtful, diligent and hard working (consistently one of the last to leave the office), Doug is very pragmatic and able to isolate the key issues that are worth pursuing. He is also very adept at juggling multiple tasks simultaneously such that nothing falls through the cracks. One of the most admirable qualities about Doug is that he is very fair and even-handed. Though he consistently fights to get the best deal he can, he recognizes the need to be transparent and fair in any negotiation with counterparties.

Simply put, Doug is one of the top attorney's I have ever worked with. We initially hired Doug's firm to provide counsel and draft the documents on our first financing. Doug took the time to understand our business model so he could better communicate how certain clauses in the financing structure could positively/negatively impact our business. There are just not many attorneys at his level with his experience that get so "deep into the weeds" as he did. After completing the financing, our company hired Doug full time as we were so impressed by his work and we continue to be impressed with hard work and dedication. I can say for certain if Doug had not put in all of the countless hours that he has into our business, we would not be where we are today.

Doug has always exhibited unparalleled work ethic and firmly grounded personal ethics. You would be hard-pressed to find a better attorney or person. I strongly endorse this lawyer. I have known Doug for close to 7 years. He is a lawyer of great integrity, dedication and intelligence. A valued and trusted adviser, he provides his views with clarity, directness and precision. He is a strong negotiator capable of employing both forceful argument and an open, friendly manner and ready humor in order to achieve the proper result for his clients. I had the pleasure of being one of Doug’s clients from May 2010 through August of 2014 while he supported my business line on many large and heavily structured commodity transactions covering 15 states and 4 markets. Doug’s knowledge, experience and support are unmatched. His work ethic, thoroughness provided complete assurance to the commercial team, allowing the team to more closely focus on core commercial matters, rather than having to worry about risks and challenges in the legal space – Doug simply took that element of concern off the table for the commercial team. This was true on a spectrum of transactions and enabling agreements ranging from ISDA transactions to complex and highly structured transactions involving several different sources of cost and revenue. This bulletproof level of service was consistently delivered to the business line, even though Doug led a number of other quite disparate portfolios, showing the range of Doug’s combined depth and breadth of expertise in credit, construction, commercial and M&A transactions. I offer the highest recommendation of Doug’s work and find him to be an invaluable professional asset, and, most importantly, a pleasure to work with.

Andrew Rudolphi provided outstanding representation for me today, standing out from other law firms that promise dedicated support but often send someone unfamiliar at the last minute. Andrew personally handled my case, ensuring consistent and clear communication from start to finish. Thanks to his expertise, my charges in Virginia were successfully reduced to a lesser offense, preserving my record and allowing me to keep my license. I am genuinely grateful for his dedication and highly recommend his services.

My husband and I were incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Michael Dietz on our estate planning process. We approached this task with a bit of resistance as in the past it has felt onerous and confusing -- our experience with Michael was completely different. His demeaner made us feel immediately comfortable and he made the whole experience simple and straightforward. He was responsive, thorough, and knowledgeable. I cannot recommend him more highly!

Jennifer Lucey, attorney, helped me settle my sibling’s estate. She was competent, ethical, and very easy to talk to. I could rely on her to answer all my questions and guide me through the many tasks. She clearly loves her work and has boundless energy. I highly recommend her services.

I hired Jennifer to represent me in a court case involved my late husband's affairs due to no will. She is extremely compassionate, well informed of the laws in VA. She answers all questions promptly. I do not know how I would have been able to navigate the probate court system without. She is fair in her charges and looks for ways to save you the client money. I would whole heartedly refer anyone looking for a lawyer to help with the VA probate process. Kathleen G. Miller

My wife Mary Anne and I were recommended to Jennifer Lucey for preparation of an estate plan. We couldn't recommend Jennifer more highly: personable, professional, taking the time to first discern our needs and then advising us on several possible courses of action to accomplish our ends. We met with Jennifer in person several times and reviewed comprehensive drafts of the documents she carefully prepared, while she revised them to closely attune to our wishes. She is an absolute delight and a consummate professional. We are very pleased.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Mclean, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
