Mary was referred to me by a family attorney in Northern VA and was highly recommended. I had no idea where to start with filing for a divorce and she helped me through the entire process with patience and professionalism. She answered all my questions, was prompt with her email responses, and always had my best interest at heart. She was exactly what I was looking for. She even offered to call and explain the divorce agreement to my ex-husband since he did not have his own representation. My ex-husband never acquired representation since the solution that Mary presented was satisfactory to both of us. Should I ever need representation again I will 100% use Mary and the Defazio Bal firm and would recommend her to anyone.

Mary was the 3rd attorney to take on our case in family court, and we were very lucky to have her in the home stretch. Her key attention to details in reviewing documents was part of major successes throughout litigation. Her professionalism and extensive knowledge of the law was impressive. She took the time to go through every outcome and scenario possible in our case explaining all of the pros/cons along the way. Most importantly, as her clients, we felt heard and understood about our endgame throughout settlement negotiations. She fought for us every step of the way and in the end we couldn't be more satisfied with the result. Highly recommend Mary and the Defazio Bal Firm.

I was married for over 30 years so this divorce was not easy. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know where to turn. I looked up attorneys on the internet and found Mary's firm. I selected this firm because it was on my way home from work. Little did I know how lucky I was. I called them one afternoon after work and Mary was the lawyer who took my case. My case had a few twists and turns, and Mary guided me through the process from start to finish. I always knew that she was looking out for my best interests. She always kept me informed of new developments and always explained to me my options. Once the divorce was finalized and the dust had settled, I had a question about something with my retirement money and what my ex-wife would get. She found an answer for me, and I wasn't charged. I feel very fortunate that Mary was my lawyer during this stressful time in my life.

I had no idea where to start with filing for divorce, and from the beginning, she explained options and answered my questions thoroughly and patiently. She helped me with a solution within my budget and I was very surprised by how smooth things went. She is no-pressure and understanding/personable. She works very quickly and it was hassle-free. She advised every step of the way to protect my interests and give me all my options and explain my rights. With her involvement, we came up with a solution even my ex-husband is extremely satisfied with, and I’m sure he would recommend her as well, even though she did not represent him. The process was so smooth on my end that he opted to forego his own legal representation and sign papers she issued to him (painlessly for me, she mailed to him explaining exactly how to sign and return). Her billing and hours were fair-- I never felt like she was trying to bill extra time or get me in the office for no reason-- and I am absolutely confident the route we took was the best for me.

Mr. Yourth represented me in both my divorce/custody case and a subsequent criminal matter. In both cases, Mr. Yourth went above and beyond. In my divorce case, he showed a superior knowledge of the law and obtained a result that attorney's I had consulted with prior to retaining Mr. Yourth told me was impossible. The judge clearly knew and respected Mr. Yourth and it was clear that his reputation preceded him. I was granted primary custody of my children (which I thought was impossible as a father), did not have to pay any spousal support to my ex (which every attorney prior to Mr. Yourth told me was a foregone conclusion) and my legal bills with Mr. Yourth were approximately 60% of what my ex-wife's attorney charged her. We literally won (or as close to winning as one can get in a divorce case) on every issue. I cannot recommend Mr. Yourth enough. Subsequent to my divorce, I ended up in trouble with the law and needed Mr. Yourth's assistance and again he was caring, responsive and more than competent. He reached a plea agreement with the Commonwealth's attorney that was far better than expected and did not charge me an arm and a leg. Mr. Yourth will be my attorney until the day I die!

Mr. Yourth was extremely knowledgeable and caring throughout a very stressful time in my life. He kept me informed throughout the process and always made me feel like I had someone in my corner. Unfortunately, my ex refused to be reasonable and, despite numerous attempts at settlement by us, my case went to trial. I received a fantastic result and also learned that, although our attorney's rates were identical, my bill was only about 60% of my Wife's. Highly recommended.

Mr. Powell and attorney Madeline Gibson worked with me over several weeks for a very reasonable price. My reckless driving, failure to appear in court and failure to comply with a court order charges were all dismissed. I was very happy with the help they gave me. Definitely recommend.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Midlothian, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
