This was my first encounter with promised law in order to take care of my father-in-law‘s trust and his wishes and regards to his family. They were very knowledgeable, provided information and answered all questions that I had before, and after the signing. We recommend promised law to anyone who is in need of getting their state in order. Look forward to working with them in the future.

While I did enjoy working Attorney Perry to assist my father, her staff constantly made the process very frustrating and stressful. More recently I requested to speak with the Attorney to ask a simple question about helping my other family member since I'm already a client and the front staff refused to set up a time or pass on a message without paying a $600 appointment fee. Needles to say I'll just have to go elsewhere to help my other family member. It's a shame the staff is so rigid. Their website says they give personalized attention, this is not true.

Several years ago my sister passed away. It was unexpected and she had not left a will or anything to go by. We were all very sad and grieving, but we had to forge on and try to make some sense of what we needed to do. It turned into a long drawn out process (2 years) before we could get everything from probate and do what we needed to do. I made up my mind then that I was going to work on leaving everything in order and easy for my beneficiaries. I was thrilled when I called Promise Law and was introduced to Geneva Perry and her wonderful staff. Everything about the process was so well thought out and organized. There were videos to watch for each step and it was broken up into several meetings weeks apart so I had lots of time to read over the information she have given me to go with the videos. I had my final meeting today and I can honestly say that I feel very organized and prepared. I know I will not worry so much now about leaving things in a mess for my loved ones. I am very happy with all the work we did together. Thank you Promise Law. .

My husband and I had our wills drawn up many years ago when our sons were under the age of 18 and we needed to have them updated. We had also never established a POA nor an Advanced Medical Directive. I contacted Promise Law on the recommendation of our financial advisor and I’m very happy that I did. Before scheduling an appointment with Attorney Geneva Perry we were instructed to sign up for an estate planning seminar. This seminar was VERY informative and made us realize that what we had done thus far was not enough to keep our estate from going into probate. After attending the seminar we scheduled an appointment to meet with Ms. Perry to gain further guidance in what we needed to ensure everything is in place. Her office was extremely helpful in setting up appointments that worked best with our schedules. Her staff is very professional and pleasant. The appointments are scheduled in stages and Ms. Perry guided us through the entire process over the course of a couple of appointments and answered every question we had or addressed any concerns we had. When the time came to review the drafts of our documents, videos were provided to help guide you through what the documents were saying, these were very good at helping the layperson understand the legal jargon. We had our final appointment today to sign our documents and the staff who assisted us today were nothing but polite and professional! I highly recommend Promise Law for your estate planning needs. It’s never too soon to start! Pam Carr

Mr. Hankins has help myself with neurmous cases, all have turned out in my favor with cases being completely dropped or a minimal un-surpervised probation for a 1 year period to then after completion of probation the charges be dropped. These cases ranged from simple misdemeanors to serious charges which could have led myself to be labeled as a felon; although Tim's wittiness save myself from facing the ramifications of the courts. I highly recommend him and I still remember his number by heart for that un-foreseen instance I get another charge. He is a doer and doesn't poke around the subject and can make an officer even doubt himself/herself of what actually happened at the time of arrest. For example, I was 20 years old, 2 months away from being 21, and I caught an underage possession of alcohol charge while fishing, I blantely told the marine police officer I purchased the beer since he stated if no one owned up to it myself as well as my friends would all get a charge, in court the officer showed pictures of the beer in the rear of my truck bed and told the judge I had admitted to purchasing the beer, Mr. Hankins then went on to perceive the marine police officer to be a total num-nuts and cross-examine him in a way that made plenty of loopholes in the officers story. Then the judge ruled the case be dismissed and to the officer who wrote the citation as well as all of the other officers in the court at the moment were stunned at the verdict since I had admitted to purchasing the alcohol and it was in my possession.

Attorney Merna took the time to understand my situation and then explain in easy to understand terms my options. He helped me to gain insight into not only my choices but went on to outline what each choice would look like. In the end, he was honest and explain why at this moment my case was not yet ready.

i used merna law for chapter 7, I was very embarrassed and felt like a failure, he explained everything well, and really fought for me. my credit was terrible i could not even get a car loan. he got my case discharged, explained how to build credit. 1 year later for approved for 1.4% car loan for five years. he is laid back, but knows his stuff. sadly i live in north carolina and they made a ruling after my case that we can no longer file in va, otherwise I would use the firm him 4 life

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport News, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
