My husband and I attended one of the seminars that was offered through the mail on Promise Law's estate planning. Not something we normally do but wanted our estate in order when the time comes for our children to have a simple and easy to navigate process. The free seminar was well worth our time, and we immediately sign up for our free one or one consultation. All our questions were answered in a way we could understand. We were in a short time frame since we were leaving the state for several months, but they made sure everything was in order prior to our departure and worked within our tight time frame with ease. We both feel so comfortable with our final estate planning. Of course this is not something that you really want to think about but we feel so fortunate that this hurdle is taken care for us. We know our children will be so appreciative also.

The entire Promise Law team were friendly and professional while doing an incredible job updating our estate plan. Each component of the plan was methodically constructed during an intense process of teaching us the details of the elements and then detailing it to our needs. I highly recommend Promise Law to everyone considering completing an estate plan.

I was given an educational approach to estate planning. The videos were informative, you can always review and be prepared before your appointment. The staff is professional and attentive. The practice is deserving of referrals.

I'm young and in good health, but realized that I have no idea what the future holds and wanted to be proactive about planning for the unexpected. I searched high and low (including here on Avvo) to find an estate planning attorney who was not only highly competent but also highly regarded, and I found that in Geneva Perry. Everyone at Promise Law — from the person who took my call when I reached out to inquire about services to Attorney Perry herself — was personable, professional, and focused on providing top-notch customer service. The practice breaks the process down in digestible pieces, and was more than willing to work with me virtually because I'm in a completely different part of the state. From beginning to end, my experience was one that made the process of planning for my death or incapacitation less macabre and more comforting. Geneva Perry has a gift for discussing difficult topics and ensuring her clients have all the information needed to make informed decisions that are in their and their families' best interest. I cannot recommend Promise Law highly enough.

Attorney Perry and her staff were exceptional. I had no idea how to start this process, but their organizational planning and seminar to explain the process answered all my questions, before I even had a chance to ask them. I highly recommend their services to anyone that need to set up Trust Planning for their families, even if you think you don't have much to leave behind. It will be worth your time and effort and your family will thank you when you are no longer here.

Around 2020, I discovered that I had somehow been declared deceased. This was rather strange, because I certainly did not feel decreased. This had many negative consequences, particularly on my credit reports. I did research on the best way to deal with this and it was clear that I needed a lawyer. I contacted a couple who weren't responsive, then I was fortunate enough to have found Craig Marchiando of Consumer Litigation Associates. Craig is on the opposite side of the country from me, but everything was handled perfectly by phone and email, with help from his legal assistant, Sydnee Shirley and senior paralegal, Vicki Crissman. Craig did an excellent job of keeping my expectations realistic and keeping me updated when necessary, in what is a LONG process, by its very nature. I am limited in what I can say due to the terms of my non-disclosure agreement, but I will say that Craig went far beyond ANY realistic expectations in my particular case and I was DELIGHTED with the outcome.

I was rear ended by a tractor trailer while I was stopped at a red light. The trouble was that I was in a loaner car from my dealership because my car was being serviced. After the hospital and doctors visits, I had to deal with insurance company after insurance company. Each one denied responsibility because I wasn't in my own car. I had no idea what to do and my health insurance wasn't going to cover my physical therapy. Then, I hired Mr. Woodhouse. He told me to concentrate on healing, follow my doctor's orders, and that he would take care of the rest. That's real peace of mind. Not only did he deliver on his promises, but he kept me in the loop though the whole process. He got the insurance company to admit fault and then got me more money than I ever thought possible. He even negotiated my medical bills from physical therapy! And everything was all taken care of within a few months. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Mr. Woodhouse again. He did a great job with my claim and is a great attorney. I would recommend him to my friends and family.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport News, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
