I hired George to represent my teenager after a traffic accident. I have been an attorney for over 20 years -- I specialize in complex criminal litigation. I know a skilled litigator when I see one. Mr. Gorman fearlessly took a difficult set of facts and convinced the judge to give us a good outcome. George is without a doubt a skilled litigator. He also provided excellent personalized service, listened carefully to his client (and parents) and knew exactly how to handle the case. Because of George's skilled advocacy, the case turned out better than we expected. I most definitely recommend Mr. Gorman.

George helped our family with the estate of our deceased brother and we obtained the necessary paperwork to have Power of Attorney for our mother. George met with us almost immediately upon calling and was quick in his responses thereafter. Our time in his office was also quick and efficient. After leaving town, our services continued with George electronically and this proved to be very easy and efficient as well. I highly recommend George for estate planning and any other relevant needs you may have. Thanks George, our family really appreciated your professionalism and services! Sincerely, The Family of Mark P.

We hired George to represent us for a matter that was extremely important for us to get resolved. Compared to other attorneys I have spoken to, George differentiated himself in our first conversation and he remained the same thoughtful attorney through the years we used George. George is very knowledgeable, but he isn’t afraid to do the extra work when it comes to research or double checking the current train of thought. He also listens and is not dismissive of your input. I think these are two incredibly important qualities. But most importantly, we found George to be very thoughtful about not only how to proceed legally, but also in the way he considered us and our family. We are very happy with our representation from George, and we are very appreciative of the outcome that George got us. I wouldn’t hesitate to use George again for any matter and he would also be my first recommendation to any friend or family member that needed an attorney’s assistance, which I do not say lightly.

I am very pleased with George’s communication and his patience with communication step by step the process of what was needed for my case. Since I reside out of state it made it a bit more confusing and complicated however he made it seem easier and I was able to complete the required tasks and get what was needed to be done. George was efficient, professional, and honest and realistic and I truly appreciated it. I’m very pleased with the outcome of my case as well as the service and care I received!

Around 2020, I discovered that I had somehow been declared deceased. This was rather strange, because I certainly did not feel decreased. This had many negative consequences, particularly on my credit reports. I did research on the best way to deal with this and it was clear that I needed a lawyer. I contacted a couple who weren't responsive, then I was fortunate enough to have found Craig Marchiando of Consumer Litigation Associates. Craig is on the opposite side of the country from me, but everything was handled perfectly by phone and email, with help from his legal assistant, Sydnee Shirley and senior paralegal, Vicki Crissman. Craig did an excellent job of keeping my expectations realistic and keeping me updated when necessary, in what is a LONG process, by its very nature. I am limited in what I can say due to the terms of my non-disclosure agreement, but I will say that Craig went far beyond ANY realistic expectations in my particular case and I was DELIGHTED with the outcome.

I was rear ended by a tractor trailer while I was stopped at a red light. The trouble was that I was in a loaner car from my dealership because my car was being serviced. After the hospital and doctors visits, I had to deal with insurance company after insurance company. Each one denied responsibility because I wasn't in my own car. I had no idea what to do and my health insurance wasn't going to cover my physical therapy. Then, I hired Mr. Woodhouse. He told me to concentrate on healing, follow my doctor's orders, and that he would take care of the rest. That's real peace of mind. Not only did he deliver on his promises, but he kept me in the loop though the whole process. He got the insurance company to admit fault and then got me more money than I ever thought possible. He even negotiated my medical bills from physical therapy! And everything was all taken care of within a few months. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Mr. Woodhouse again. He did a great job with my claim and is a great attorney. I would recommend him to my friends and family.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newport News, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
