Strong communication and responsiveness
“No matter what questions (easy or hard), they are always willing to answer my questions with great detail. No matter how many times they had to explain my answer, they were always patient, caring, and professional.”
3
Positive client outcomes and satisfaction
“Artisha helped get 'Case dismissed. Not guilty' on an assault/batter charge against me. Bottom line. We connected. She is sharp and she is on point in the courtroom.”
Cons
1
Potential issues with billing and fees
“Artista Gregg is the worst attorney around. She says one thing and does another. Charged me 4k for a one time court appearance that she said was a flat fee. Got in the courtroom and switched up. She wanted another 15k and I had to pay an extra $500 for a court reporter.”
2
Lack of communication and responsiveness in some cases
“Awful experience with this firm.. Retained for my family member, the attorney never contacted my family member who is the client, ever.”
3
Concerns about fairness and objectivity in certain cases
“I felt attacked, I felt that she was not being fair in the situation and looking at the best interest for the child. She listen to what the father who made it seem I was jealous of his new relationship that he was in.”

She wanted another 15k and I had to pay an extra $500 for a court reporter. I fired her for her unprofessionalism. And I’ve yet to receive my court report documents and my refund . Ive been calling for months and have yet to get a legit answer on why I haven’t gotten my refund or documents. And she refuses to talk to me and I don’t know why. I’ve filed two complaints one to the bbb and the other to the Virginia state bar . Stay away

I retained Brandon for several cases, and if I ever needed representation again, he'd be the first lawyer I'd contact. When I hired Brandon, my life was taking a nose dive but his extensive knowledge of the law came through for my family. He represented me in my divorce and fought an insurance company to make sure they paid me my fair share when a drunk driver hit my home. Largely due to his diligence, my family now is doing great and we've moved on from those issues. The one thing that comes to mind when working with Brandon was my peace of mind knowing that he had everything handled for all my cases. I never had to worry about paperwork, never had to worry about how "good" the other side was and never had to worry about if we were going to win. We did, every time. Brandon is an unrelenting lawyer and you can trust that when he says he can help, he can help.

I call him a great defender because, he fought tooth and nail to speak for me. In the beginning I tried to do it on my own and realized it was bigger than me. I even did mediation with party involved through the EEOC, and I felt like I was being bullied. After talking it over with my family, I sought out a lawyer. I met with Mr. Bybee and his team, and they was so kind. He heard my side of the story and said I had a case, so I hired him. From there, every time I had a mediation with the other party he was there to speaks for me. I no longer felt like I wasn't being heard or I was just a small person in a big company. We spoke on the phone and even through email. If he didn't write back right away, I knew he was in court defending another person. When he was done though, he always responded. When my case came to a closing we did settle and I walked away grateful to him. He is a very caring and family oriented man. He always asked how me and my family was doing and even when my case was over, he checked on us doing the holidays. I am grateful to this man and his team. If I have to use him again, I will be calling.

Brandon has been the most thorough attorney I’ve ever encountered. He keeps me up to date with proceedings, makes my stressful situations feel seen, and goes hard for me. I appreciate everything he’s done for me, I’m happy with the results of my case. And would recommend to anybody who had similar concerns.

I was faced with a series of difficult and life-changing events, which potentially ruined my professional standing as well as my financial security. Mr. Jewett worked tirelessly and aggressively to sort out and define a multitude of wrongful and illegal actions committed against me and brought them into the context of a legal suit. He performed competently and swiftly in dealing with the perpetrators of torts against me and in turn, ensured that all wrongful actions were corrected. Now, I have been made whole, my professional standing remains strong, and I am financially secure. I will return to Mr. Jewett if I am in need of legal representation again. I highly recommend his services to others.

This was the first time I needed an attorney. We had a very serious, emotional problem that other attorney refused to take. Josh was the ultimate professional. His expert knowledge and compassion for our case helped guided us to successful resolution. I strongly recommend him to anyone in need of employment law expertise.

John Jewett is very knowledgeable about employment law and extremely transparent to ensure there are no surprises during the process (i.e. cost, mapping possible outcomes and its impact on you). He came highly recommended and I was definitely satisfied with his work.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Norfolk, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
