Ms Maiden was hired to represent me in a child custody case. Not only did she get me what I was asking, but got me more. She called and checked in on me, was very personable, and eager to fight any battle opposing counsel threw at her. She was always willing to go to bat for me.

I hired Ms. Maiden because she promised me that she did more "hand-holding" through a contentious divorce than the typical lawyer. The exact opposite was true. She ignored my case to the extent she even failed to present an offer that was made by the opposing party; when I finally had to hire another lawyer, I was too burned out to file a bar complaint for what is very much a breach of duties. In short, she was non-responsive, allowed my case to drag out, caused me unbelievable stress and ultimately cost me thousands of dollars when she abdicated my bargaining power by pissing off and ignoring my ex-spouse and his attorney as well. If I could give her a negative rating, I would as she had a complete negative impact on me, my family and my case.

Besianne is the most honest, professional, and transparent attorney I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She not once made promises to me about the outcome of my child’s case. She consulted with us and I felt the sincerity in her voice, mannerisms and character! She didn’t promise us the moon. She consulted with us and at the end of our consultation I felt like she would fight for us as if we were her own family. A decision that I am so glad that we made. She’s honest, decent, caring and transparent. A testament of what lawyers should pride themselves on being. Besianne has not just become our attorney but also has become our friend. Her unmatched knowledge of the law is secondary to none! As a mother fighting for your child and fighting for the truth I highly recommend Besianne because she’s a fighter and her knowledge of the law is AAA+!! The office and its workers are welcoming, professional and courteous! We not only procured an excellent outstanding attorney but also a lifelong friend. Hats off to Tavss Fletcher for having an awesome, amazing, second to none attorney in their firm that will fight to the bitter end! The BEST ATTORNEY EVER! Besianne Tavss Maiden you are in my opinion the most honest, brilliant, caring and professional attorney EVER! Thank you thank you thank you for representing our family and your honesty and knowledge of the law is absolutely phenomenal!

Pros
1
The lawyer is professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate in handling family law cases
“I have hired Ms. Maiden on two occasions. Both times I have found her, professional, knowledgeable, accessible, and compassionate. I would highly recommend her to anyone needing a family attorney.”
2
The lawyer is a strong advocate who fiercely defends her clients in court and leverages her extensive legal knowledge to protect their interests
“Let me tell you this woman is a powerhouse. She's not kissing ass, she earns the respect given to her. She defended me fiercely. Her knowledge of the law was astounding. She thought of things that I never even dreamed of in my defense.”
3
The lawyer is transparent, honest, and upfront in her communication with clients, providing clear guidance and setting realistic expectations
“Besianne is the most honest, professional, and transparent attorney I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. She not once made promises to me about the outcome of my child's case. She consulted with us and I felt the sincerity in her voice, mannerisms and character!”
Cons
1
The lawyer can be difficult to reach, slow to respond, and may not be as attentive to the client's needs as promised
“She was difficult to reach, painfully slow to respond, often demanded additional payments for what appeared to be little or no work by her and her staff, and miscommunicated a court appearance date that could have resulted in a warrant for my arrest.”
2
The lawyer may not always advocate strongly for the client's best interests, potentially leading to unfavorable outcomes in the case
“Ms Maiden 'WAS NOT' working for me. She was doing 'NOTHING'. I believe it was close to 3 yrs. when Ms Maiden called to give me final court date. Once there I was stunned, shocked, angry because my husband's earnings were in the six figures, had 3 successful businesses that were thriving, businesses I helped him get off the ground and all she fought for on my behalf was $19,500.00 a year, forced out of my home and received a small portion from the sale, NO health insurance, NOTHING from husbands businesses.”

Mr. Kevin Sharp is a Rockstar Attorney! He is a tireless and zealous advocate, a man of integrity, compassion, and impressive results. Kevin’s knowledge and experience in Personal Injury Law cannot be matched. Beth, Mr. Sharp’s Paralegal is kind, responsive and she kept me informed throughout the entire process. Mary Commander took the time to review my case, which seems unique and complex to me, but she was able break things down for me in a way I haven’t heard. Her kind, yet no-nonsense manner was exactly what I needed. She provided advice for how I should proceed in my case while also advising me to save money. Mary Commander’s skills and expertise as an attorney are clear, and you should hire her.

Kelly Vasta is reliable, knowledgeable. What makes her standing up from other lawyers? She will go above and beyond to get the best results. She will work with you and with prosecutor to get the best deal possible. And if prosecutor is not willing to work with you, she will find the way to get things accomplished anyway. She prevented my marriage, 10 years professional career and personal situation from being ruined. From supposly not defendable case ( according to lawyers),she made things happen that let me came out without any serious damage, and let me continue my professional career and future professional progress to be attainable.

Kelly is an amazing attorney. She worked diligently on my child custody case and provided invaluable legal advice throughout the process. I was impressed by her knowledge and understanding of custody law, and, with her guidance, my case was resolved to my great satisfaction. Kelly's courtroom presence and negotiation skills are exceptional. Should I need future legal help, it'll be Kelly I call. If you need legal help, I strongly recommend you give her a call.

I have had the privilege of having Kelly has my attorney for a very challenging custody case. She was excellent with all of the challenges. She was there no matter the time or day when I needed her. I could call her and if she was busy as soon as she was done I would get a call or email. I would recommend her to anyone and use her for future situations I need a lawyer for.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Norfolk, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
