My fiance has been through hell & back with his custody & child support case. His previous lawyer was terrible & he probably should have never signed the agreement, but, alas, he did -- and we were living with the repercussions until the situation became truly dire, including for his three boys. Emily agreed to meet with us for an hour in July 2017 free of charge to review our case. Afterwards, she was cautious but assured us she thought she could help & that my fiance's agreement was unfair and wrong. Even though the case was based far from her home base, she still took it on and she never once stopped fighting for us and the best interest of the boys. We faced several hurdles, but Emily and her phenomenal legal assistant Kaitlan (Kaitlan is a secret weapon, no doubt) were not only a superior legal team but also irreplaceable advocates, which set them apart from most lawyers I have encountered. Emily is fair, firm and fierce -- and ready for battle in a courtroom. We walked away with nearly everything we had asked for despite other lawyers telling us that there was no shot, no matter the situation. As others note, Emily is incredibly busy. She takes on difficult cases, is a mom and gives her all to everything. We were at first apprehensive when it was at times difficult to get ahold of her personally; but it didn't take long to recognize that Kaitlan herself is incredibly talented, skilled and well-versed in our case. Both Emily and Kaitlan were vital to a successful outcome, and we could not be more grateful. I have worked around trial attorneys in my field of work for some time, and there is NO ONE I would recommend more than Emily Meyers Munn & Kaitlan Costner.

Mrs. Munn took my case and assured me from the beginning she was going to do her best, and she DID! I was charged with 8 felonies, Munn fought for my freedom from my bond hearing to my trial. I worried katilyn all 6 months but she was always so polite, understanding and assuring that Munn was fighting. Munn and God are the reason I got my kids, car and money back and also NO Felony. I will recommend Munn to anyone looking for a REAL lawyer not one that will tell you what you want to hear but one that will fight for you till she get the results you need. I love Munn and Katilyn they really made the hardest time in my life alot easier. WANT A REAL LAWYER GET MUNN she super busy and cant cater to all your questions personally but thats why she has katilyn, but trust her when she says she fighting for you!!!!!!

I contacted Chris Albiston about a speeding ticket I received in 2019. Chris and his team did an excellent job of reviewing my case and exploring all avenues possible for my situation. After my consultation I felt very comfortable and reassured that he would provide me the best possible result. In court, not only was Chris well prepared & professional but he was also extremely knowledgeable. I could tell he was truly fighting to help me in the best way he could. He ultimately helped me get my ticket dismissed. I was exceedingly pleased with my experience and would highly recommend Chris to anyone seeking professional advice.

Kelly Vasta is reliable, knowledgeable. What makes her standing up from other lawyers? She will go above and beyond to get the best results. She will work with you and with prosecutor to get the best deal possible. And if prosecutor is not willing to work with you, she will find the way to get things accomplished anyway. She prevented my marriage, 10 years professional career and personal situation from being ruined. From supposly not defendable case ( according to lawyers),she made things happen that let me came out without any serious damage, and let me continue my professional career and future professional progress to be attainable.

Kelly is an amazing attorney. She worked diligently on my child custody case and provided invaluable legal advice throughout the process. I was impressed by her knowledge and understanding of custody law, and, with her guidance, my case was resolved to my great satisfaction. Kelly's courtroom presence and negotiation skills are exceptional. Should I need future legal help, it'll be Kelly I call. If you need legal help, I strongly recommend you give her a call.

I have had the privilege of having Kelly has my attorney for a very challenging custody case. She was excellent with all of the challenges. She was there no matter the time or day when I needed her. I could call her and if she was busy as soon as she was done I would get a call or email. I would recommend her to anyone and use her for future situations I need a lawyer for.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Norfolk, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
