I was recently charged with wreckless driving and I questioned the merits of the case. I contacted Jason to see if there was a way to fight back. He was extremely knowledgable, covered every aspect of the case and pretty much predicted every detail of how things would go. When I met Jason at my court hearing he let me know what I needed to do while he worked a bargain with the prosecutor. Within minutes he came back in, before my name had even been called, pulled me up to the judge, and pretty much gift wrapped a very acceptable outcome within 10 minutes. I was back at work in no time.

Jason has been our trusted family attorney for over 7 years. He has a tremendous knowledge of the law but also a great sensitivity to the people he is serving. I recommend him to all of my Real Estate clients when they need an attorney, be it for a speeding ticket, divorce advice or have a RealEstate related problem. He's is simply the best!

Jason pulled together living wills, power of attorney and set-up trusts for both my immediate family and parents. He respectively asked "hard" questions which will better position ourselves when it comes time to execute. Very professional, trustworthly, knowledgeable and timely. I highly recommend Jason for services which require legal attention.

Mr. Collins is a consummate professional and worked tirelessly on my behalf to defend my professional license against a slanderous attack. He was responsive to my needs and very knowledgeable of the specific laws impacting my situation. His communication skills were excellent and his work ethic second to none as he went above and beyond my expectations to defend me. I would recommend him without reservation.

I hired Thomas Plofchan of the Westlake Legal Group at Cascades to handle my property boundary and ownership case. He politely handed my case to an inexperience attorney (Chris Hudspeth) at his firm that wrote one letter to the opposing Law firm and left Westlake Legal Group without giving me notice that my file was closed. At least two additional mail communications threatening aggressive financial and physical responses as a mean to resolve the dispute, were sent to the Westlake Legal Group, neither of which were shared with me, nor was I made aware of their existence and possession by Westlake. They never returned my calls or lived up to the rule of professional conduct, which I feel is an ethical violation for lack of communication. I once consider Thomas Plofchan an old friend when he use to do title work for me but after his not living up to taking care of my negotiations and no follow-up of my case that has caused me financial, mental and physical unrest until this day! I have finally settle with my neighbors. All of this could have been avoided if they got back to me with these letters which has caused over four years of hardship and financial stress for me and my family. I highly feel that if I could give his Law Firm a below 0 star, it would be appropriate after all that they have caused me. I will be seeking further actions against him and Westlake Legal Group. Shame on you!!!

I hired Plofchan for a civil matter. He was very persuasive and compelling in my initial meeting with him, and I hired him. After that, he was an absentee lawyer. I was handed around his firm, from attorney to attorney - as Plofchan was unavailable for meetings, depositions, hearings, etc. Each time I was billed, to bring a new lawyer 'up to date' on my case. At the final trial, Plofchan showed up, but he simply did not know my case. He missed very major and significant aspects of my case, and the other side definitely got away with lying on some really basic stuff that my attorney should have known and easily presented available evidence against. Plofchan also irritated the judge with his pompous attitude, and I paid the price for that. I changed lawyers, and was told by my new lawyer, that the lawyer who fought for the other side against Plofchan in my case (still the attorney for the opposing side) - was laughing for a week at how poorly Plofchan was prepared for my case. He knew he got away with murder in my case, due to Plofchan - and thought it was quite funny and pathetic. I see Plofchan has positive reviews, but I strongly do not recommend him for civil cases. I felt like his bread and butter for a case he did not take seriously, but his bill certainly did not reflect that!

Your money is well spent hiring Mr. Plofchan. I was facing serious life changing penalties, and a commonwealth attorney who was well prepared. Mr. Plofchan and Daniel Griffith were able to get the Refusal thrown out under a technicality, and prepared a strong enough case, so that the commonwealth was willing to drop the DUI (3rd) to a Reckless Driving. My penalties were much less severe, and my life was able to continue on track. I was very thankful that I hired Mr. Plochan. I started with another lawyer, but after a few pretrial proceedings I found different counsel, and I'm almost positive if I hadn't I would not being sharing any good news.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Potomac Falls, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
