Josh was extremely considerate with my case as well as my physical and emotional state during it. He would always start off our conversations asking how I was doing and took care to understand how I felt about each decision made. I felt very confident in his representation of me and would contact him first again if ever needed. He made sure that I was comfortable at every point of our case and that I understood what was going on as well as how I should proceed to best take care of myself. I believe I am very lucky to have had him as an attorney.

I have worked with Josh Silverman on a couple of legal matters over the last few years. I find Josh and his team to be professional, responsive, and caring. The greatest complainant I can give someone, is that they pass the mom test. And yes I would refer Josh and his team to anyone in need(including my mom)!!

When I was in a car accident - which was not my fault - and I found that dealing with the other person's insurance was highly stressful, we asked Josh to step in to help. I thought I could handle this without involving a lawyer, but it actually just compounded my stress so on a recommendation from a good friend, we hired Josh. Once Josh became involved, my stress level went down tremendously! ! From that point on, Josh handled just about everything and let me know what I had to do, which allowed me to focus on healing. I highly recommend Josh because not only are you getting a lawyer who can help you when you already have so much to deal with, you're getting a person who cares!!

I hired Mrs. Hart to represent me for a custody case, and she went above and beyond with the court process. She has been my lawyer for the last 2 years for various custody issues, and always advises me in the right direction. She is smart, trust worthy and knows Family law very well. I have recommended her to other family members who have been beyond happy with her services. I trust her completely with my past cases and my upcoming cases, I highly recommend Mrs. Hart for anything having to do with family law.

After my car accident I reached out to Mark to understand how to handle and what to expect from health and personal property insurance. He was quick to respond and walked me through all of my options and provided suggestions. Mark took control of all communications and research and provided regular updates on what was going on. He really helped lessen the stress and frustration that’s goes along with post accident anxiety. I would recommend Mark if you are ever in need

Jeremy interviewed us thoroughly about our needs, interests, and goals. He reviewed the purpose of each of the documents he would prepare for us and then went over them carefully before we signed. We were very pleased with Jeremy's professionalism and personal attention. Highly recommended.

Jeremy is meticulous and courteous. We worked with him to prepare a Living Trust. He walked us through the process, made sure we understood what we were doing, and did so in a timely manner. And perhaps most importantly, he treated us with great care and respect. We trust him deeply.

Jeremy has provided legal services for my wife and me on several occasions. In every instance he has been professional, prompt, and knowledgeable. He has helped us in estate planning by providing wills, power of attorneys, and advanced medical directives. With his expert knowledge of the relevant legals requirements, he has given us wise counsel, but always in way that respects our own wishes and is tailored to our unique needs. Jeremy has also done work for us related to the constitution of an LLC. He walked us through the necessary steps and handled all of the legal requirements. His work was done quickly so no time was lost. His office is well-organized and the work to be done is clearly communicated ahead of time. Questions that arise along the way are answered patiently and with a depth of insight. It can be hard to find a lawyer who is at once professional and personable, but Jeremy is that rare attorney.

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
