Omg… saw some reviews AND just had to write. She and Edward Barnes represented me over 14 years ago!!! I was in a custody battled with my ex-girlfriend. Absolutely NO legal, or biological, or relative connection. This person had NO legal ability to try and gain access to my child .. however the courts allowed this case to have “life”. But it was ALL about $$$. Jennifer Crossland and Ed Barnes just went for $$. I was paying over $15,000 a month (it was 2009) to protect me and my biological 4 year old child. It was ILLEGAL what the courts and THIS legal team did to me and my family. They should be disbarred from practice!

You truly get what you pay for, especially in legal representation. And if your kids mean enough to you you won't think twice about retaining Craig Sampson. A father in a custody battle in VA can be a bad position to be in and bring low expectations regarding the outcome. Craig is the best in the business hands down. Extremely well prepared and has a court presence second to none. He will shine for you if given the opportunity. His pre-trial performance stopped the opposition in their tracks so overwhelmingly, they withdrew the case prior to the actual trial. Where they were not prepared, he was and made that day the trial. The judge acknowledged every point and legal precedent he presented. I can't say enough to truly explain his skill sets and professionalism, but you can witness it yourself. Although this is business, I will be eternally grateful for what he did for me and my daughters ensuring we stayed as one, family.

I'm recently divorced, it was stressful time, my attorney Mellissa Vanzile was so professional and always to the point. She was always compassionate with me, knowing I was stressed out. When we went to the pretrial hearing, Melissa argued professionally to the Judge, and we were able to get him to side with Mrs. Vanzile and myself. Through this process, my ex-wife and I are still friendly and are able to talk freely with each other, I Owe a lot of that to Melissa, because of the way she handled our situation. Also, we have a daughter, son in law and a very special Grandson. My ex and I agree they are three people that are very important. During Holiday, birthdays and special events we will be able to stand in the same room together and especially school events with our Grandson. Agin this would not be possible without Melissia's help. Sincerely Alan W.

Jennifer works really hard for cases she’s sure to win. From consult (Infortunately, I took her callous attitude and complete lack of bedside manner as a positive at this point) to preparing for court she did nothing to guide me through a custody case or help me understand what was best or happening. She treated me like I did not matter. It felt more like she was ready to work with the other attorney for an abusive, alcoholic drug addict father. I sincerely believe Jennifer Crossland needs to only handle contested divorce cases. If you have a sensitive child custody case - and you and your children have been emotionally abused by your spouse you will leave her feeling worse than you did after years of fighting just to get to the point you could safely go pay her $300 for a consult and another 3k for absolutely nothing.

Better result than even Doug thought could even be possible, but regardless, he never stopped trying to get the best possible outcome. Doug was very upfront and explained to me that it was very unlikely that the end result would not include jail time. He laid it all out that it was really up to me to make the most effort to help my case. At no point in time was he able to work something out with the cycling prosecutors to offer anything that did not include jail time. In the end, when the case was presented to the court, the prosecutor allowed Doug to plead my case, and refrained from making any sentencing recommendations. This was all due to Doug's persistance and tireless work to highlight my life as a whole, not just the infraction, and the ruling was not something, either of us thought possible, but I received a suspended sentence of up to 12mos in jail and up to 6mos loss of license, as long as there are no new citations for the next 12mos. It was made very clear to me, how fortunate I was, the opportunity I have been afforded, all due to Doug and his efforts. I cannot thank him enough, nor the gratitude I have for the prosecutor and the court for even considering the ruling that allows me to stay out of jail, which if I went to jail, would have resulted in the loss of my employment. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you,, Douglas McGee!

Mr. Goodwin was very professional and honest from the start, and gave me many different suggestions regarding how my speeding ticket case might be most favorable in court. I was traveling from NC to KY and was pulled over in VA after my 18 month old daughter got sick in the car - I was simply trying to get somewhere safe where we could take care of her. Mr. Goodwin was able to get my ticket dismissed, which completely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Mr. Goodwin to anyone who might require his services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
