About two years ago, Susan was referred to me by a co-worker. I instantly hired her after our initial meeting. She is very direct, honest and a straight shooter. She is still my lawyer due to the continuous back and forth with my soon to be ex and his lawyer. She consistently keeps me in the loop of what is going on with my case. She fights for what I want and need 100% and she is always prepared when we go to court. I believe she is here to help anyone that needs it.

Susan was referred to me for my custody/support/visitation and divorce proceedings. After sitting down with her I hired her immediately. I found her honestly and straight forward attitude refreshing. She helped guide me through this difficult and stressful process with a positive attitude. Never once did she fill me with false expectations or did she suggest unrealistic goals, instead she stayed honest and down to earth. Phone calls and emails are returned quickly and without attitude. Susan's positive attitude, knowlege and immediate attention to my needs gave me great comfort during this time in my life when I am feeling the most vulnerable.

Has the gift of gab,no action in the court room. She hype the case to be cut and dry case, an easy case, then one week before the hearing she started to sing a different tune. I arrive one hour ahead of time to go over somethings, she did not appear until 20 minutss before hearing time, when I was talking to the Division of Child Support Enforcement she left me with them alone so she could go the bathroom and fix her clothes and snap her shoes. Her representation was useless, unprofessional and resulted in my child support being reduce by $552. She showed no remorse or empathy, and talked to one of the attorney's that was helping with the father of my children case, and after the case she tried to tell me she ran across him somewhere else, and he happened to had been in the court room during the hearing. She expected me to believe that, tried to persuade me not to appeal the ruling per the converstation with him, and indicated the both of them did not feel I had a case. I shocked her when I told her who he was and that he did not just happened to be there, and how I saw him converstating with the father of my kids & his wife. She was still in the court room when I saw that, and she didn't even have a clue of my knowledge of that. I asked her then who side was she on. She will play you for stupid if you let her. Watch her, she will sell you out with out a thought.

Being that I am not a native of Richmond, VA, I had to rely on trusted referrals during my search for legal representation in the area. After being referred to Gary and having a short phone consultation, I retained him as my lawyer without hesitation. He was upfront about legal fee's, procedures, and expected timelines from start to finish of the case. Similarly, he provided realistic and unbiased scenarios of the outcome for my specific case; and this was key to my own personal understanding, because it helped focus my expectations going forward. My specific case was regarding an auto accident, in which the other driver was at fault. Gary was great at delegating tasks with a deadline for both of us to achieve. This was beneficial because it ensured I remained abreast of any developments in the case. If you are searching for an ethical, efficient, and dependable lawyer in the Richmond area, I have full confidence in recommending Gary Berdeen.

I am native to California, but was disputing a child custody case in Virginia. Mr. Berdeen was recommended by a friend after vetting other lawyers in the area. Mr. Berdeen helped me understand and take care of what was needed for me to obtain custody of my niece. It was an uphill battle that Mr. Berdeen helped me take with stride every step of the way. He was attentive to my family's needs. He presented my options and possibilities with a frank and concise manner. Mr. Berdeen gave my case his focus along with his expertise. I am now thankful that I will be enjoying my niece in California. She will be filled with all the love her family has for her here! Thank you! Mr. Berdeen!

In life circumstances can happen that will cause you to suffer the consequences for the rest of your life. Many times these circumstances can't be corrected without Herculean effort, because of onerous document requirements and all the legal bells and whistles that go with attempting to restore your life to normal. This was the case in my life until I found Sheri Thaxton. We initiated my case with Richmond City before Covid struck delaying for more than 6 months our inevitable hearing. Through the entire time Sheri kept me informed and touched bases with me often to let me know she still had me in mind and my case was moving forward within the courts, and we were waiting for the opportunity to stand before the judge. Finally court day arrived and within 15 minutes of entering the court a decision was made in my favor which has changed my life for the better, and is the final step in restoring my life to that which it was before I caused its course to take a negative turn that affected me for decades. I recommend anyone with a legal issue contact Sheri Thaxton, and if you're wise you'll just go ahead and hire her. And for any legal need Sheri doesn't handle, she'll have someone within her great firm who can. 10 STARS!

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
