I had Suzi Hutchens to do a will for me. I met with her the first time and felt completely confident in her abilities. She had also been referred by a very good friend of mine who is a lawyer but does not handle anything but corporate law. We did an overview of what I needed and she told me what I would need to get together and information that could be emailed or called into her to get it going. Two days after we met, I had some additional questions and called the office, leaving 4 messages from Tuesday to Friday with the Asssistant/Receptionist and never received a return phone call. By Wednesday, I asked if she was out of town just so I could get an idea of when she may return the call and was told that she was not and was in the office. On the last call, the Receptionist hung up on me. Since I am a busy medical professional, I did not have time for these games. On the following Thursday, I dropped by the office to see if I could catch her in and was told she was out of the country and rudely assured she had received my messages. The female voice was recognized as the one who had accepted my calls. If she worked in my office, and I hire many, many people, she would have been fired immediately. She is the rudest, most arrogant, confrontational individual that I have come across and should never be working with the public. Three days later, I spoke with a very nice gentlemen by the name of John, who promised to relay the message to her. I finally reached Suzette after she returned and she stated she had never received any of my messages. I know it is very difficult to obtain good, competent staff these days but this was ridiculous. Mrs. Hutchens came highly recommended but sometimes an employee can make you or break you. The front desk person is the first point of contact in any business and should be someone that will make Clients feel welcome. This woman does not belong there. She is a menace to an otherwise good law firm and can ruin a reputation quickly.

I unfortunately have to agree with the Yelp review that someone wrote in 2012. Oh my, his daughter was right, there was no problem with Ms. Hutchens but that older woman that answers the phone freaked me out as well. SHE IS NUTS! She is still the front desk and will talk about putting a spell on you and black magic potions. What he said was right on. What happened to professional staff in a law office and why would this beautiful office hire someone like this. Yes, I agree, don't accept her offer for a beverage.

This review is hard to write because I really liked her personally. I had to give a low score on trustworthy because of her staff. I really had no complaints with her; she is a fine lawyer and knowledgeable in so many things. She was attentive and compassionate to my needs and the case. However, her decision making skills end with the legal field. When she is not around, the older woman at the front desk will argue with you and try to provoke you into saying something you dont want to say. I actually watched her do this with another client and then a few minutes later, Mrs. Hutchens walked into the office with her hands full and the woman just started smiling and acting real sweet. The way this receptionist was talking to people was unbelievable. But when Suzette walked in, it was like a light bulb had been turned on. She obviously has no idea what this employee is made of. Why she would act that way to everyone in the waiting room is unbelievable. One client told me on the way out that she has been there for years and fooled everyone. I don't know, I just want to stay away. I would hire Mrs. Hutchens again if she would meet in another place. If she knows what is good for her business, she will. There going to lose all their clients with this monster at the front desk. Oh, and she also does not give the Attorney your message when you call so call back if you do not recieve a return call. Mrs. Hutchens will tell you she never got the message and apologize. The Attorney is an extremely competant and knowledgeable person to have on your side.

I hired Ms. Hutchens after a car accident. She was great for the short time I worked with her, always returned calls and was attentive. I had to change lawyers because after either the 2nd or 3rd time I went in, I had dropped off some additional paperwork received from the insurance company. As I walked out to the parking lot, one of her employees followed me out and offered to "expedite" my case if I paid her $500. I got back in my car and upon arriving home, called the bar association who told me what I already knew, THIS IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL. Even the attorney had not charged me for my case and had explained I and she would only be paid if we settled or won if it went to court. I then left a message for Ms. Hutchens on her voice mail, and guess what, never returned my call. She always did before. I know that woman intercepted the message. I am only giving a bad score on trustworthy because of the employee; I am sure the attorney had no idea what she is doing. Just wanted to make everyone aware....just because the attorney is a winner, doesn't mean they don't have unscrupulous people working for them. I hired another attorney who told me I should have made an immediate complaint to the bar but it would be her word against mine. I wonder how many other folks have fallen for this DO NOT PAY ANY OF THEIR EMPLOYEES. And by the way, this woman was very friendly. Didn't look like the type. Thank you.

Better result than even Doug thought could even be possible, but regardless, he never stopped trying to get the best possible outcome. Doug was very upfront and explained to me that it was very unlikely that the end result would not include jail time. He laid it all out that it was really up to me to make the most effort to help my case. At no point in time was he able to work something out with the cycling prosecutors to offer anything that did not include jail time. In the end, when the case was presented to the court, the prosecutor allowed Doug to plead my case, and refrained from making any sentencing recommendations. This was all due to Doug's persistance and tireless work to highlight my life as a whole, not just the infraction, and the ruling was not something, either of us thought possible, but I received a suspended sentence of up to 12mos in jail and up to 6mos loss of license, as long as there are no new citations for the next 12mos. It was made very clear to me, how fortunate I was, the opportunity I have been afforded, all due to Doug and his efforts. I cannot thank him enough, nor the gratitude I have for the prosecutor and the court for even considering the ruling that allows me to stay out of jail, which if I went to jail, would have resulted in the loss of my employment. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you,, Douglas McGee!

Mr. Goodwin was very professional and honest from the start, and gave me many different suggestions regarding how my speeding ticket case might be most favorable in court. I was traveling from NC to KY and was pulled over in VA after my 18 month old daughter got sick in the car - I was simply trying to get somewhere safe where we could take care of her. Mr. Goodwin was able to get my ticket dismissed, which completely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Mr. Goodwin to anyone who might require his services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
