I have been working with Mr Marcus for several years now and today we settled. He has been very professional and willing to work with me on this case. We settled for the amount that I was initially hoping to receive. I highly recommend Mr Marcus and his firm.

I feel extremely lucky to have found Keith Marcus after my dog and I were attacked by a huge Dogo Argentino with no owner in sight. Against the odds, and counter to what I was told by all the other lawyers I spoke with beforehand, he was able to obtain compensation for my dog's injuries and his life-saving treatments, which ended up costing thousands of dollars. This is remarkable in a state such as Virginia, which has very lenient laws regarding owners of dogs who attack other dogs. My dog and I will be forever grateful to this man.

This is a big thank you to my friend and attorney, Mr. Keith B. Marcus, a shining star in RVA’s legal community. Keith recently represented me for the third time over the years. All three cases settled in my favor. The last one, an auto accident case, reached a settlement that was more than gratifying! I have also recommended Keith to several friends, who were equally satisfied. Being involved in hundreds of cases over many years and having only one disgruntled malcontent seems to me you’re batting 99.9% - just saying. Thanks again, Keith. H.M. “Mike” Glass

My family hired Keith after he was recommended to use from a friend. My father in law was in a horrible car accident. Keith met us at the hospital only two days after the accident as we were staying their day and night. He spent a lot of time explaining and answering questions that we had. Keith then told us how he worked his payment and we all agreed to hire him as we felt very comfortable with his answers and honesty. It was a long road and my father in law eventually passed after 76 days in the CCU. Keith was with us every step of the way, even if it was just an email or text to check on us personally. Our estate is finally coming to a close and Keith stayed true to his word about his percentage in the end. Its nice to know that their is a lawyer out there that is out to help people and not just to make a dollar. If I had to start this process over again my first call would be Keith. In my opinion Keith is one of the good guys HONEST, HONEST, HONEST!!!!! Thanks again Keith!

I hired Mrs. Hart to represent me for a custody case, and she went above and beyond with the court process. She has been my lawyer for the last 2 years for various custody issues, and always advises me in the right direction. She is smart, trust worthy and knows Family law very well. I have recommended her to other family members who have been beyond happy with her services. I trust her completely with my past cases and my upcoming cases, I highly recommend Mrs. Hart for anything having to do with family law.

After my car accident I reached out to Mark to understand how to handle and what to expect from health and personal property insurance. He was quick to respond and walked me through all of my options and provided suggestions. Mark took control of all communications and research and provided regular updates on what was going on. He really helped lessen the stress and frustration that’s goes along with post accident anxiety. I would recommend Mark if you are ever in need

I was overwhelmed with medical debt because my health insurance would not cover some of my medical bills. I was worried sick about my bills and at the same time I was sick. When I met with Boleman Law they suggested bankruptcy. Bankruptcy cleaned up my debts and now I can focus on my health. They were compassionate and understanding during this really hard time.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
