Colleen has been my attorney for almost 6 years now. She’s represented me in everything from adoptions to civil matters and beyond. She’s not only amazing at her job and has successfully handled every situation I’ve thrown her way but she’s an incredible and brilliant human. She’s the type of woman I hope my daughters aspire to be and I feel incredibly lucky to know her and have her in my corner

Stepdaughter adoption- My 8yr old daughter's biological father moved to another country. After 4 yrs and little to no contact I thought there was no way this would happen without a big headache. Well, I was wrong; to say everything I need t say I will give in bullet points: Caring, Personable, Upfront, Follow-up, Efficient, Economical, Experienced and Awesome.

I am a client of Ms. Quinn and paralegal Peg, and she won my case in settlement. I met Colleen from a referral of a referral. I was facing a hostile work environment because of my sexual orientation (I'm a gay pastor/Chaplain) at the Veteran Affairs Hospital. I filed a EEOC against the Veteran Affairs and won with Colleen leading the fight. She was costly for me, but was worth the risk. I say that not only in hindsight after winning the settlement, but I say this because I watched her advocate for me, with me, and I felt was with me throughout all of it. In my David and Goliath battle against the Federal Governement, Colleen and Peg picked up our little stones of my story and just like the story reveals, we won. I felt confident in her ability to help me navigate this. She also listened, like really listened, to the things that were impacting me and how they were impacting me. Also, Colleen allowed me to participate in my case and help keep my invoices as low as possible, too. I did research, wrote notes, worked on questions, organized my evidence. I was able to do all that while saving funds. I trusted her skill and training to take my non trained collection of things to be that things that she needed and she did so, expertly. On the documents for submission, she did her parts with such skill and precision. When interacting with opposing counsel and the judge, Colleen spoke with confidence and exerpertise. She was cool, calm, and a ninja. But most of all, Colleen and Peg believed in me. Being a gay, married, pastor in a christiandom that will constantly reject, including family, Colleen and Peg became my family, my believers, my cheer squad, my high five, my hug, and my lawyer. I will always remember Colleen and Peg and my heart will forever be grateful for the kindness, advocation, and just good lawyering that helped me win my case. If you are looking for a fantastic lawyer and a kind human, consider hiring Colleen and her team. She is an earth angel, wearing the white hat, and fighting the good fight. Thank you Colleen and Peg for being my lawyer. I pray that your work continues to fight the fight that others in my community can't do alone. Thank you for standing with me and so many being othered in all the ways. You are a true hero.

Mrs Quinn was an incredible lawyer that pay attention to every little detail. She has a fire in her to win! She's efficient and effective. She has helped me with a wrongful death and intentional tort case. Sadly, I'm still going through court trying to get justice for my son but the time that I did use her she was fantastic.

I hired Mrs. Hart to represent me for a custody case, and she went above and beyond with the court process. She has been my lawyer for the last 2 years for various custody issues, and always advises me in the right direction. She is smart, trust worthy and knows Family law very well. I have recommended her to other family members who have been beyond happy with her services. I trust her completely with my past cases and my upcoming cases, I highly recommend Mrs. Hart for anything having to do with family law.

Jeremy has provided legal services for my wife and me on several occasions. In every instance he has been professional, prompt, and knowledgeable. He has helped us in estate planning by providing wills, power of attorneys, and advanced medical directives. With his expert knowledge of the relevant legals requirements, he has given us wise counsel, but always in way that respects our own wishes and is tailored to our unique needs. Jeremy has also done work for us related to the constitution of an LLC. He walked us through the necessary steps and handled all of the legal requirements. His work was done quickly so no time was lost. His office is well-organized and the work to be done is clearly communicated ahead of time. Questions that arise along the way are answered patiently and with a depth of insight. It can be hard to find a lawyer who is at once professional and personable, but Jeremy is that rare attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
