Pros
1
Exceptional litigation skills and courtroom presence
“Her litigation skills are flawless in court and I always had the utmost confidence in her abilities throughout all of my proceedings.”
2
Strong attention to detail and organization
“She was meticulous with each detail as well as organized with each document and remembered my case details sometimes better than I did.”
3
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“Melissa would make time to call me between 15 minute breaks while she was in court to help advise me on next steps. This resulted in our turn-around time averaging a few days.”
4
Commitment to achieving the best possible outcome
“Melissa helped me prepare for the trial and kept every appointment with me, as well as adjusted to my schedule. She's extremely well-respected by the judges, and is an absolute bulldog in the courtroom when she needs to be.”
5
Strong legal expertise and strategic approach
“Melissa's knowledge of case law is incredible. She ensured that I didn't get 'put into a corner' based on the wording of the PSA.”
Cons
1
Potential for cases to drag on longer than expected
“My custody, divorce and spousal support cases dragged on for 3 years.”
2
Lack of empathy or understanding of family dynamics
“Personally I don't think she, who doesn't have children of her own, should handle divorces involving children. She's a cold unempathetic person that has no idea what kids need in terms of stability, etc.”
3
Possibility of unexpected case outcomes and lack of transparency
“The things she indicated would happen in the courtroom went differently than she described to me beforehand and she asked questions during the proceedings that even I would not have asked.”
4
Potential for mistakes or oversights that can negatively impact the client
“She sent out the final divorce decree with all of my new information attached... leading me to again move after my now ex-husband did use that information to show up at my home. Her office never apologized, or even took responsibility for their mistake.”

I was a father who had originally agreed to share custody with my ex. The arrangement was in place, but I had not signed. My ex had moved, had the kids in new schools, but was making decisions that I believed were not in the kids' best interests. I had retained one attorney at the cost of several thousand dollars but was dissatisfied with the progress. I met with Mrs. VanZile, and within minutes she had an understanding of my situation and the type of person (my ex) I was dealing with. I always felt like I had someone fighting in my corner. At trial, she was able to expose my ex's motives and ultimately I was awarded a change of custody. My coworkers, who came to the hearing for support, witnessed Mrs. VanZile's performance and a couple have reached out to me in the years that followed for her name and contact info. I gladly share. My kids are young adults now, and the conflicts have long since settled. Your experience may vary, but as for me, I am grateful for the help I received.

Melissa did a great job representing me during my difficult divorce and took the steps necessary to avoid having to go to court. She was always very prompt in responding to me and laid out various options in a way I could understand so I could make an informed decision.

Melissa has represented me before, during, and after my complex and contentious divorce case from an abusive ex spouse. She is professional, prompt, organized, and detailed and always advises and explains options and possible outcomes. In numerous court hearings (including custody, property division, appeals, support) she has been a skilled, poised and effective litigator, fighting for the best possible outcome for me and my child despite the complexity of the situation and numerous changes in counsel for the opposing party. Compassionate, consistent, and professional, I highly recommend Melissa.

I hired M Vanzile to represent me through a very contentious divorce. Her expertise allowed for fair custody and equitable asset outcomes. I also appreciated her candor as it was tremendously helpful in allowing effective co-parenting to begin sooner through all the vitriol. I wholeheartedly endorse her.

Mark Krudys is an exceptionally talented lawyer with a proven track record of success. His thoroughness and diligence in handling every aspect of my case have been outstanding. He keeps me well-informed and explains everything in layman's terms, ensuring that I understand the legal proceedings. In addition to Mark, I have had the pleasure of working with two paralegals, Will and Claire, who are truly the best. They possess excellent communication skills and have been incredibly understanding and compassionate towards my situation. Their support has been invaluable as I navigate through this challenging time. While my case is not yet resolved, I have full confidence in the Krudys Law Firm. Better result than even Doug thought could even be possible, but regardless, he never stopped trying to get the best possible outcome. Doug was very upfront and explained to me that it was very unlikely that the end result would not include jail time. He laid it all out that it was really up to me to make the most effort to help my case. At no point in time was he able to work something out with the cycling prosecutors to offer anything that did not include jail time. In the end, when the case was presented to the court, the prosecutor allowed Doug to plead my case, and refrained from making any sentencing recommendations. This was all due to Doug's persistance and tireless work to highlight my life as a whole, not just the infraction, and the ruling was not something, either of us thought possible, but I received a suspended sentence of up to 12mos in jail and up to 6mos loss of license, as long as there are no new citations for the next 12mos. It was made very clear to me, how fortunate I was, the opportunity I have been afforded, all due to Doug and his efforts. I cannot thank him enough, nor the gratitude I have for the prosecutor and the court for even considering the ruling that allows me to stay out of jail, which if I went to jail, would have resulted in the loss of my employment. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you,, Douglas McGee!

  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
