Horrible experience with this place. They are way overpriced for the quality of service they provide. They give horrible advice and not very good representation from this place. Our attorney, Elizabeth Smyers, and her assistant were horrible at communicating, demanding us to meet their deadlines while completely allowing the other party to not provide court required information that was needed. Then, withdrew from our case to leave us in a bad position for upcoming court. Please do yourselves a favor and stay away from them

Clayton Worthington and his staff went well beyond what i expected from a family law practice. He was honest with me about expectations. He laid out options and was realistic about expectations for each path. He was respectful of my moral compass while clearly explaining the outcomes I could expect. Most importantly, he genuinely cared about the my mental health and the impact a divorce would have on my children. He made a difficult situation manageable. In the end, I truly feel like I got a fair shake from the legal system. I can't recommend these guys enough. You need them if you're going through a divorce. It's worth every penney.

Pros
1
Excellent legal representation and attention to detail
“Britany is very knowledgeable and extremely approachable. There is a sincerity in her demeanor that can get lost in many lawyers.”
2
Strong communication and client-focused approach
“Britany was more of a friend than a lawyer. No matter what time of the day or night, she was only an email or phone call away to answer some of the craziest questions or calm any concerns that I had.”
3
Thorough preparation and professionalism in the courtroom
“In the courtroom, Britany is all business. She is soft spoken, but factual and very direct. In my experience she not a vindictive or belligerent lawyer. She presents facts, and will back those facts up in a very professional and calm manner.”
4
Compassionate and understanding of client's needs
“Britney McPheron was very compassionate as my daughter described the abuse to which she had been subjected on visitations over the years, and Britney immediately developed a plan of action to protect my child and give her resources to help her heal.”
5
Excellent results and successful case outcomes
“Britney McPheron accomplished what we thought was impossible: she won my daughter the right to say yes or no to her own visitation. She freed my child and myself from an abusive human being.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and responsiveness
“Why would I hire a lawyer to just agree keep things the same right? She made me think things were going to go one way and they didn't. And before I even realized what was going on it was too late then she didn't care to do anything to fix it.”
2
Leaving the case mid-way
“I had hired her for a custody case just for her to leave me six grand in the hole and leave the law firm in the middle of the case.”
3
Questionable billing practices
“She then tried sendin me a bill from her new law firm that had nothing to do with my case as well.”

Mr. Davidson was recommend to me by a friend when I started looking for a divorce lawyer. When I met Mr. Davidson I felt safe and understood, for the first time in years. There was never any question that I asked that was not answered clearly to the point that I could understand, especially when explaining the legal system. Any time I had a problem come up I could call and he would call me back personally and help me through it, and help calm me down. He really dose care about his clients and tries to make the whole process as smooth as possible. Thank you so much Mr Davidson.

I was looking for a lawyer to represent me in a reckless driving case and reached out to several law firms on the same day. From the moment I spoke with David, I felt confident I could trust him. He took the time to listen to my concerns, presented a clear plan of action to prepare for my court date, and stayed in regular communication, promptly responding to all my questions. Thanks to David, the reckless driving charge was reduced to a lesser charge of improper driving, resulting in a $150 fine plus court costs. I’m extremely satisfied with how David handled my case—professional, efficient, and delivered an excellent outcome. I highly recommend him!

  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Richmond, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
