Pros
1
Excellent communication and responsiveness
“David was very honest and up front about the potential punishment I could receive but was also very convincing and confident that everything would be ok. During the months leading up to my court date David and his team stayed in contact with me and kept me up to date on everything that was happening and kept me prepared for every possible outcome.”
2
Highly knowledgeable and experienced in various areas of law
“David is a younger attorney but he really knows the law and his way around the court room. I have had him represent me on a few different matters in various areas of the law and he has always done a top notch job.”
3
Achieves favorable outcomes for clients
“When my day in court finally came I was able to walk out of the court room a free man. A little lighter in the wallet and with several months of obligations to fulfill for the courts but much better off than I would have been with any other Attorney. He was able to have me convicted of a 1st time DUI ( which it was) with a BAC of .08 and had my fines reduced to the mandatory minimum.”

David has assisted my family in two separate child custody cases. One was for physical custody of my husband's daughter. David was able to help my husband obtain physical custody of her by practicing ethically and with integrity. This was a lengthy and drawn out case with many complex across state line issues. He went above and beyond his call of duty to answer all of our questions and guided us in a way that we were within our legal rights and also protecting the best interest of the child. We had absolutely no issues getting in contact with him and were also able to establish a relationship with his assistant, Jessica. We trust David so much that we hired him to assist us in obtaining full physical and legal custody of a family member's child. We contacted him and the very next day, the papers were drafted and ready to be signed. David has always operated in a timely fashion for my family. We recommend him with glowing reviews to anyone who is in need of legal assistance for custody issues (and criminal matters) because we trust in his ability to get the job done every single time!

We hired David to represent us in two cases and were very pleased with his firm. He and his team displayed a hard work ethic and were very professional. They also offered support and guidance throughout the process, even on weekends and were always there to listen to our concerns. David's team knows the laws and it's obvious from their performance that they have the experience to handle any case. We would definitely use this firm again and highly recommend them.

I hired David to represent me in a custody case that ended up lasting a year (due to the other party). David was there for me every step of the way. Any questions or concerns that I had he answered very promptly which was very unlike any other attorney I have ever come in contact with. It did not matter how small or large my question was David took it seriously and made sure every aspect of that question was answered. If your looking for an attorney who will work for you then you must hire David Robinson.

I have hired David to help me with multiple cases. In fact my entire family uses him. He represented me in a custody case that I had 2 lawyers previously not be able to help me. He then represented me in a criminal case that was dismissed. David is very attentive and helpful. He doesn’t make you feel like you are being ridiculous and he genuinely cares! He is very knowledgeable and knows the laws. It took 3 years for the other lawyers to get me no where and it took David less than a year to get it fixed. I recommend him to everyone I know!

I call him Mike because he was a major part of my theatre program when he was a student at Patrick Henry High School and I was his teacher and director. He defended me last year when I was arrested for assault following a domestic situation. I was not guilty but was changed and had to go to court. Mike was at my side, and I'm here to tell you, no other lawyer could have done better for me. Not only do I admire his expertise as a lawyer, but I am also proud of him after having known him when he was in school. The altercation that prompted the assault charge came from an attack on me from a homeless man who lived with my fiancée and me. He assaulted me and being afraid of him—he is in his early 50s, exceedingly strong, and I am 76, exceedingly weak—I grabbed a kitchen knife, which he promptly snatched from my hand. Police arrested me because I had brandished a knife and I was booked, but later released on an unsecured bond. The next day, after hearing the details, Mike came to our house and ordered the man off the premises. He refused to go, so Mike called the police and the man was "escorted" to jail. When it was over, I told my fiancée that nobody should mess with Mike. His advice in court was excellent, to take the 5th, and he got the man in question to do the same. Therefore, since neither of us would testify, there was no case to hear, so the judge dismissed the case. I was so happy and so pleased with what Mike did. If you need an attorney for any kind of litigation, Robert "Mike" Doherty is your man, the best there can be!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Salem, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
