Had a consultation. They suggested I do some leg work before moving forward, which I did. Then I tried to set up a meeting to continue the process. After being ghosted for two weeks, one of the "Partners" took the phone call and stated they were refusing to represent me with a very rude and condescending attitude.

HORRIBLE LAWYER ! If you like hiring a Lawyer that looks and acts expensive Jason pelt is your guy, "this is easy" was his words, but lost the case and all he had to say was "its a tough day at the court" and walked away, costing us 70k + in expense. Absolutely HORRIBLE LAWYER, & his charges are the worsts. Doesn’t care about his clients, no preparation whatsoever, the money you have for him is the only thing that really matters, you will LOSE with Norton Pelt, PLC

Attorney Pelt failed to represent me for my case...in fact it seemed as if he was representing the other party...did absolutely nothing he promised...and now it's been almost 2 months and I'm still waiting for my settlement check...I would not recommend him to anyone hiring him was a complete loss and waste of time

We have used Mr. Pelt now for numerous cases (unfortunately) and we have not experienced any issues. Phone calls and emails are returned in a timely manner and you know what is going on. Reading other reviews, yes, he is very forthcoming and straight forward, but isn't that what you want in a lawyer? I would rather my lawyer be honest with me then tell me untruths along with my money. I would recommend him if someone was looking for a new lawyer.

Hands down-the BEST attorney in the area. I would never go in front of a judge for anything, without Mr. Pelt. Jennifer, his secretary, is amazing. There is always correspondence and it’s always in a timely fashion. If I do t hear anything for a day or two, I’m never worried, because he has never left us stranded or let us down. Absolutely recommended!!

My son was facing a serious misdemeanor charge, and it looked as though there was not a way out. Thaddeus is a genius at negotiating, and he knows the law. My son's charges are deferred for a year with a chance at expungement. We are blessed beyond measure and thankful for his services. Jessica is a blessing. Thank you both for all of your help, for taking my son's case and for fighting for his freedom. We are eternally grateful. God bless.

I was facing 3 felony charges and when I contacted Mr. Furlong’s office, Jessica was the first one I spoke with. She was absolutely incredible, so nice and friendly, and was able to make me feel better about the situation at hand. Mr. Furlong had delivered on every single thing he said he would do for me, and was able to knock all 3 felonies down to one single misdemeanor and keep me from going to jail. He had given me the absolute best outcome for my situation and I truly can’t thank him and Jessica enough!!

I cannot recommend Mr. Furlong and his paralegal, Jessica, enough! I was facing a DUI charge and was at risk of having my security clearance impacted. Not only did they get the charge dismissed, but it is being expunged from my record! The service and expertise that Furlong and Associates provided was first-rate and gave me peace of mind. I would not hesitate to recommend or hire them again, should the need arise.

My name is Hadidja. Mr. Williams was excellent in defending my case which seemed complicated to other lawyers. Some lawyers refused to represent me, but Mr. Anthony Charles Williams did not hesitate. At the trial he was able to see the little details in the testimonies before anyone else. Of course the victory was ours. I would recommend him and his staff to anyone.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Stafford, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
