Pros
1
Exceptional legal expertise and advocacy
“John Bryant is by far the most effective, principled attorney I've come across. Family law can be difficult, messy and emotional. John and his team were with me every step of the way.”
2
Personalized attention and genuine care for clients
“Ms. Stubbs was a constant source of wise and steadfast counsel, was thorough in her planning and aggressive in the courtroom, and always made me feel like I was her one and only client.”
3
Strong communication and responsiveness
“Whenever speaking with Mr. Bryant, I felt that he was genuinely concerned with my well-being, the outcome of my divorce, and the impact it had on my future. I truly felt that he listened to my needs and concerns.”
4
Dedication to achieving the best possible outcome
“Thanks to John and his staff's hard work and dedication, we were able to achieve a positive outcome for my case.”
5
Positive client relationships and trust
“I put complete faith in him in and out of the courtroom. All qualities that make for an outstanding family law attorney.”
Cons
1
Billing concerns and delays in case processing
“I am very disappointed. This firm was appointed as Guardian ad Litem for my daughter in a case involving bullying...The attorney didn't arrive at the stated time and then spent the entire time with opposing counsel.”
2
Potential bias and lack of objectivity from the Guardian ad Litem
“If you are unfortunate enough to get Mrs Carper as a guardian ad litam I would strongly reccomend you request a new one. Mrs Carper is extremely rude, biased and lacks the ability to separate her personal opinions and judgments from her case.”

To be fair Mrs. Stubbs is the only divorce lawyer I have worked with but she was amazing! Her entire team was so supportive I truly felt cared about. She held my hand through much of the process answering every question with patience and I always felt protected. My ex husband was not as big of a fan often referring to her as my personal guard dog. I would simply reply with “That’s because you’re on the teeth end, as the one holding the leash I think she is is wonderful.” Mrs. Stubbs & her team were worth every penny, and I never for a moment regretted hiring them. Would give 6 stars if I could.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this law firm. I was fortunate enough to have a coworker recommend Caitlyn Stubbs to represent me in what turned out to be a lengthy and very stressful divorce. I had the privilege of working with Ms. Stubbs and her paralegal, Emily Link, for more than two years, and words cannot express how grateful I am for them, their professionalism, and their dedication throughout one of the most challenging moments in my life. Ms. Stubbs’ was a constant source of wise and steadfast counsel, was thorough in her planning and aggressive in the courtroom, and always made me feel like I was her one and only client. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

After relocating from San Diego, CA, my wife and I needed to update our estate documents. Ms. Carper and her staff did an outstanding job understanding our needs and developing the right solution. We highly recommend Goodall, Carper & Dillion.

My son was facing a serious misdemeanor charge, and it looked as though there was not a way out. Thaddeus is a genius at negotiating, and he knows the law. My son's charges are deferred for a year with a chance at expungement. We are blessed beyond measure and thankful for his services. Jessica is a blessing. Thank you both for all of your help, for taking my son's case and for fighting for his freedom. We are eternally grateful. God bless.

I was facing 3 felony charges and when I contacted Mr. Furlong’s office, Jessica was the first one I spoke with. She was absolutely incredible, so nice and friendly, and was able to make me feel better about the situation at hand. Mr. Furlong had delivered on every single thing he said he would do for me, and was able to knock all 3 felonies down to one single misdemeanor and keep me from going to jail. He had given me the absolute best outcome for my situation and I truly can’t thank him and Jessica enough!!

I cannot recommend Mr. Furlong and his paralegal, Jessica, enough! I was facing a DUI charge and was at risk of having my security clearance impacted. Not only did they get the charge dismissed, but it is being expunged from my record! The service and expertise that Furlong and Associates provided was first-rate and gave me peace of mind. I would not hesitate to recommend or hire them again, should the need arise.

My name is Hadidja. Mr. Williams was excellent in defending my case which seemed complicated to other lawyers. Some lawyers refused to represent me, but Mr. Anthony Charles Williams did not hesitate. At the trial he was able to see the little details in the testimonies before anyone else. Of course the victory was ours. I would recommend him and his staff to anyone.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Stafford, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
