When I needed help with custody and visitation I sought advise from fellow attorneys who litigate in family courts across Northern Virginia. They all recommended Laura Hamilton to handle my complex and heart rending appeal. She has accomplished more with her resolve and tenacity than any of the so called prestigious pedigree firms whom I had hired in the past. I have witnessed her intense preparation, professional demeanor, and courtroom brilliance sway previously skeptical judges. Her reputation impressed my fellow lawyers, and now, I am over awed by her dedication. I am grateful to have Laura Hamilton on my side.

Laura is the type of attorney that you see on television shows like "Law and Order." She's a formidable opponent, and extremely logical and rational. One thing that I loved about having Laura as my counsel is that even if she asserted that we should take a certain action-----she would still be weighing the strategy associated with taking that action up until the very last minute. Laura is very STEALTHY. Her mind SHREDS information, down to the finest detail. In addition to her legal prowess, Laura is extremely nurturing. There were many instances in her time spent with me where she gave me practical advice for my specific situation that had nothing to do with practicing law. She remained accessible via phone and text, even at night and on the weekends. If you need an attorney who is going to go the extra mile to not only provide you with representation but support then Laura is your person. She's argued cases in front of the Supreme Court and more. What touched me the most about Laura, was her willingness to work with me financially. She's certainly seasoned enough, to not have to do that. She did that because she believed it was the right thing to do and there were many instances in which she would say "Look, that will work itself out. Lets focus on the case." Her character as a human being is what shines even brighter than her legal prowess. Another thing I want to mention is that when Laura drafted motions on my behalf, they were completely solid. She filled her motions with tons of case law, shutting down the emotion based arguments of the opposing counsel. HIRE LAURA!

From the moment I met (online) Ms. Vaillancourt, I knew I was in good hands. She started by introducing herself and explaining that she would be my lawyer for the day in court. She made sure I had been given my questions of what the trustee would ask of me so I would be relaxed at knowing exactly what to expect. When I arrived at the courthouse, she began explaining everything that would happen in the courtroom. I came in somewhat scared and worried, but she calmed any fears or concerns by answering all of my questions before we went into the courtroom, even the ones about the smallest details. Once in the courtroom, and before we started, she explained again, step-by-step what the procedure would be, where I would sit, where the trustee and his aides would sit, what they would do, and I felt myself beginning to relax. I watched other lawyers go up with their clients and was amazed that they were no where near as prepared as we were. I had all of my information ready, and so when I saw that one person ahead of us still had not filed certain paperwork, I knew again I was in good hands. When my turn came to go before the trustee, Ms. Vaillancourt sat beside me in front of him when he asked questions, and gave me assistance when I did not understand a question, and helped me through the whole process. When the trustee asked me questions, I answered in yes, no, etc, and I was done in only about 5 minutes, unlike the persons who had lawyers from a different office. It had taken 15 minutes to half an hour for them to go through the questions. She is smart, professional in manners- knowledge- and appearance, and answers all of the questions you have. She is very knowledgeable in the law, in how the court works, and what is expected of her clients. She is very kind and considerate, and understands how hard this process is for people. When she spoke with me outside the courtroom, she spoke quietly so as to not let others in the room hear my information and that showed me I could trust her. I had never gone through any kind of process like this before, so I was grateful that I had Kaitlin with me the whole way. And, she was concerned enough about me to do a follow-up to see how I was doing. Total care, kindness, knowledge, and responsibility for her clients.

Kaitlin(Katie) is an amazing attorney. She responds promptly to emails and telephone calls. She is extremely thorough and makes you feel safe and that your financial situation is secure in her legal hands. She had to work quickly with some matters and did so. I would highly recommend her. When I reflect on her assistance I would say two words come to mind, "reliable and thorough" yet she always has a smile and a supportive word to help you feel more at ease and less stressful

Kaitlin was assigned by Robert Weed to handle my bankruptcy. She did a great job She responded to all emails including one from my parents and answered questions Concerning my bankruptcy and the garnishment case. When I went to the hearing for The garnished wages I was very nervous and she eased my nerves by telling Me that it would be ok. We ended up losing that case but I really felt comfortable With her. This is the second time I have used the law offices of Robert Weed and Kaitlin is a great lawyer.. Regards Laura

I consulted with Rachel twice through my Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and retained her services, knowing that she would cover all aspects of my divorce proceedings. She provided education, adjunct resources, support, and transparency throughout. I truly could not have done this on my own and Rachel quickly responded to any questions/concerns I’ve had. Divorce is not an easy process but Rachel’s knowledge and expertise made this a seamless transition. I would definitely recommend Rachel Virk if you’re seeking a thorough, direct, and results-driven attorney. Great experience!

This is my second time writing a review for Ms. Virk, the first of which was under the name FDB. After retaining Ms. Virk, she delivered the most favorable outcome that I could imagine. She even directly helped both of my children, writing them letters for school on multiple occasions. She is a very caring lawyer, but more importantly a very caring person. She truly is invested in every one of her clients, and that attitude transcends any work she could do. Not to mention, she does amazing work. There is not a lawyer I could imagine that would positively affect me more than Mrs. Virk has. She is wonderful and I unequivocally recommend her to anyone in need of a compassionate divorce lawyer. Like I said in my first review, she is a warrior.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sterling, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
