I have nothing but praise for Philip Walsh. Mr. Walsh represented me last year in challenging the denial of a short term disability claim after my open heart surgery. He is professional, knowledgeable, persistent and never missed a deadline. He became my advocate in every way conceivable. He cares about his clients. I would not hesitate to call him again if I ever need a lawyer. I highly recommend Mr. Walsh as a legal representative.

I was so fortunate to find Mr. Walsh to represent me. I reviewed several lawyers and met with them. Decided that Me Walsh was the best and I was not disappointed. He explained what was happening every step of the way and he was successful at resolving in my favor. Highly recommend him.

Mr Walsh provided me with excellent legal representation. His knowledge and skill combined with his compassion for my situation resulted in a favorable outcome. Mr Walsh is not all about the money like so many other lawyers...he is all about doing the right thing. He took my calls each and every time I had a question and he never rushed through the call providing me with detailed information.

Approximately six years ago, our family retained this attorney to represent us as plaintiffs in a private nuisance lawsuit that had already prevailed before the Supreme Court of Virginia 'pendent lite' had already overturned the Virginia Circuit Court's denial of injunctive relief to remove a noxious private nuisance (oversized aggressive growing tree that stood 120' feet high, 5' diameter trunk and invasive root and branch systems) that was destroying our home which was located next door to a tortfeasor neighbor who refused to remove the tree and its resulting root and branch systems that destroyed our home's entire value. Philip Walsh committed legal malpractice and we received inadequate legal representation even though our family prepaid all attorney fees, expert fees and trial fees up front before trial. The family not Walsh retained, prepaid and prepared seven expert witnesses in engineering, soil science, arbors (tree scientists), governmental regulation or lack thereof and etc. that made this case foreseeably a slam dunk for a substantive settlement and/or successful trial outcome that required removal of the tree and imposition of damages against the Tortfeasor Defendant neighbor. Mr. Walsh compromised our case with the insurance defense firm and with the insurer and his conflicts of interest in this case and compromising of our trial strategy, tactics, designated witnesses, violations of attorney-client privilege, violations of attorney work-product all without consent by us and in direct contravention of our express intentions and commands to Walsh made our case a disaster. We lost our home and all of our savings due to Walsh's legal malpractice in handling our case. Then after the case was lost and we lost everything and were in bankruptcy, Walsh sued us for padded false attorney fees that the US Bankruptcy Judge and the US Trustee both decided were "not appropriate" and "not verified" by Walsh's records. Accordingly after the 341 Meeting of Creditors, Walsh's claims of debt against us were dismissed by the Federal Bankruptcy Court.

I had a dispute with my tenant and was having a hard time dealing with their ridiculous claims, constant threats and refusal to leave the property on lease expiration. Ben handled the case from start to finish smoothly, always being professional, attentive and responsive. I was amazed how quickly he picked up on the case details and was very reassuring in my first conversation with him. He was polite, firm and very objective/calm with the tenants. His thorough knowledge and prompt action was instrumental in making the tenants leaving the property on time and without any ongoing issues. It was my first time using a real estate lawyer and the experience was excellent and hassle free. Thank you Ben!

Stan came highly recommended by our social worker. They worked great together and our kids' adoption was finalized within 56 days! Stan also very thoughtfully created extra unofficial certificates just for the kids! The kids were tickled to see their names celebrated in print like that. It meant a lot to them and to us.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Vienna, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
