He explained the process thoroughly and he did a great job in the court room. Plus, for the work that he did and the outcome, his fees were very reasonable.

A good Friend, that was in a similar situation recommended me to Barry, not only did he win my cases but restored my reputation that I had work a life time to build. And that meant everything to me. True Justice that's what it all about!

It is very appreciative the labor and effort you guys put into my case. You all handled my case very professional and very efficiently. When other supposedly professional lawyers didn't want to take my case. You were there for me. I am definitely satisfied with the services you provided for me. Thank you for taking the time. Hope to hear from you guys soon. I definitely recommend your services to anybody who is in doubts about you and your firm. You and your secretaries are superb. Keep up the great job. Wish you the best for years to come. Sincerely, Nicolas

I am a business owner who uses attorneys from time to time. Jim Lang is the best. He helped me fix a big problem I had at the VMRC on a matter of great importance to me. This was not a simple case so it turned into a 4 year journey. Over that entire time Jim was always smart, tenacious, experienced, a great listener, and (most importantly) caring. A lot of road blocks popped up over the life of my case. Jim figured out a way over, around or through each one. Jim's deep contacts at the agency, and the credibility he has built up over his many years representing clients before the VMRC, turned out to be a resource that was very helpful in getting my case resolved in highly favorable terms. Another thing that I liked about Jim is that he kept me informed all along the way. I always knew exactly what was going on with my case. This attorney is a quality human being who is very good at what he does. Highly recommended!

Mr. Pugh was our custody/visitation lawyer. He knows his stuff inside and out and after working with him, if we needed to hire an attorney again, we would have zero hesitation hiring him again. We had swapped from another attorney, also known in the area, to try a chance with Mr. Pugh after using the services of his partner, Mr. Karpov (who's equally impressive), and it was the best decision we could have made. Our previous lawyer was very hesitant and submissive in their advice to us each time an issue occurred which was frustrating. In contrary, Mr. Pugh was straight to the point and confident while seamlessly rolling with the punches in action. He advised us realistically and in a style that matched my husband's needs and made us feel secure walking into the court. Mr. Pugh won our case, allowing our family to move on from stressful times in a fair but satisfactory manner.

Greg Pugh is one of those old school lawyers who doesn't have to pay to be at the top of a website. If you understand anything about the legal industry you understand what I am talking about, I unfortunately went through a rough patch in life and got arrested for DUI two times within a year. The first lawyer I hired had a hundred 5 star reviews, I paid $5000 for my first DUI... BIG mistake I was sold and thought I had to of been hiring the best because the price and the reviews. NO I would of got the same deal had I used a public defender... it was an expensive learning lesson however after that painful experience I took the advice of someone who referred Mr. Pugh. Mr. Pugh did not sell me and tell me he was going to hold my hand like the previous attorney. I went on the fact he has been practicing for over 30 years, I was nervous because I was at risk of losing my career in the military and facing serious jail time. I respected his resume and prayed I wasn't going to get results I got from the first lawyer I hired. Well case was dismissed and I was charged 1800.00 ... I will never recommend anyone else and I am happy that there are still good people in this world that are not just trying to make a quick dollar and pretend to care about my military career and future. Thank you again Mr. Pugh

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Virginia Beach, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
