Cons
1
High legal fees that can quickly deplete retainers, with limited flexibility for payment plans

2
Aggressive and confrontational approach in dealing with clients who are late on payments
“Jerry has no problem calling you like a collection agency and demanding to know where your bill's payment is or else they can't proceed (and he'll talk to you like you are a convict just making excuses to not pay, it's extremely upsetting when you've already paid thousands).”

I was referred to Jerry Denton after meeting with several other personal injury attorneys. I knew immediately after meeting with him, this was who I wanted in my corner. Mr. Denton is personable and compassionate with his clients, yet a very skilled and aggressive negotiator. He not only met but exceeded my expectations in every aspect of my case.

I was represented by Mr. Jeremiah Denton in a complex case spanning over two years involving custody of children, a veteran, complex mental health issues, financial issues and much more. The outcome I sought was very rarely granted in the state of Virginia. However, it was granted in my favor. Without question I know that it was Mr. Denton's extremely competent representation and broad experience in presenting this complex case that brought the resolution I hoped for. Two able opposing attorneys put great energy into their presentation of their case. But it was Mr. Denton's measured cross examinations that delivered a clear understanding of the facts which the judge followed with interest. Mr Denton played no games; he was prepared on complex facts and spoke to the point. During the course of this case he was always available to meet and he and his entire team delivered support during a very difficult time. Anyone seeking an attorney would be very fortunate to have his representation.

We met Jeremiah A. Denton III when searching for a lawyer to handle our son's defense against a civil suit. We regret not having met him earlier in this process for the criminal defense as we are certain things would have been different for our son today. However, we did find him for the civil suit and he believed in our case. Jerry Denton and his team fought an uphill battle for our son. He took what appeared to be a lost cause and turned it around to let a jury see the truth of what actually happened in our son's case. He was dedicated and tough. He was knowledgeable, competent, and confident in and out of court. He treated us with compassion and understanding. Jerry's team was also diligent and supportive! Our experience with Jerry and his team has given us hope that someone is on our side and will stand by us.

The guy has swagger, no doubt, and he will tell you that you can file suit against someone and "oh yes, we can do this for you!" type of attitude which is great. But the billing is astronomical and what's worse is your $5k retainer will be eaten up right away and well before you go to trial and then they want you to pay it forward, you cannot pay your fees in installments with this firm. And Jerry has no problem calling you like a collection agency and demanding to know where your bill's payment is or else they can't proceed (and he'll talk to you like you are a convict just making excuses to not pay, it's extremely upsetting when you've already paid thousands). So you're really caught in a hard spot because you've spent so much to date and accomplished nothing and then you realize your attorney has no problem treating you like you are a deadbeat, so you really don't want to deal with him after that point. Far from a class act. He wanted $25k to defend a small $6k judgement but he wasn't up front about that estimate until the 5k retainer was used up. He should have informed us it would have cost far more than $6k for his services in the matter, this would be ethical. I would rather have lost the $6k and not attempted to retain his services. I wish he had been more honest. We're military officers and we thought we could trust him but this guy makes a lot of money without ever going to trail, I imagine, from people just like us. We had far better relations with a much larger firm that's not known for trial work but at least they gave us excellent and straightforward advice and used our money effectively. Our work with Jerry was impersonal and extremely expensive and came to nothing. Beware

If it wasn't for this man and his staff I would not have had such a great outcome with my case. Everyone at this firm is very knowledgeable, gentle but stern, and straight to the point. Never in my life did I see such wrong doings going to be done to me but Mr. Denton knew what had to be done to get what was deserved. Justice, peace of mind, my life back on track, these are just a few out of several to list that this firm did for me and without them who knows what would of happened but I will say, I trust these people with everything and I couldn't have had any better legal representation from any other firm. Thank you guys so much.

Mr. McCracken is the best all around lawyer that I have encountered in my 20 years in the Army and 20 years in the commercial arena. He is a lawyer who actually cares about his clients and their best interest. He is extremely professional, has extensive knowledge of the law, an excellent understanding of human nature, and an exceptional drive to accomplish the desired outcome. He is a lawyer that gets the job done.

Often times we cringe at the thought of having to hire an attorney. Greg was a breath of fresh air to deal with. He was compassionate but very professional. I would very much recommend Greg as attorney worth hiring if you need legal consultation or representation. I would hire him again if I ever needed assistance in the Virginia Beach VA area again.

Greg simply does everything he says he's going to do and then does it extremely well. If he says he's going to take care of it, it's taken care of.

Ms. Blessing was recommended by a friend. Upon speaking with her and a mediator, our divorce was settled with both parties happy, and processed within two weeks. She took extreme care to ensure that it did not become contentious, and was very thorough in her explanations of the processes. We walked away from it with minimal fallout and mostly amicable. I would definitely recommend her to anyone that needs an amazing attorney.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Virginia Beach, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
