If she offer free legal services I wouldn't recommend her to anybody. She was suppose to do what's best for the child and she only did what was best for the mother. She didn't represent me but I sat in a case that she was the GAL. IF YOU HAVE HER AS YOU GAL PREPARED YOURSELF TO LOSE THE CASE!!!!!!! If I could give her a negative rating I would. She did nothing for the child sad.

If you want a person that is a child advocate, she is not the one. She's says she's for the betterment of the child but won't answer you emails (sent 3 months ago, no response), will not look at any evidence you present to incriminate the other party, will use what you tell her and actually use it as her own findings in her final report. If you are a unfit parent and it can be proven you are, then she is the one you want in your corner but if you are a parent that knows what their child needs/wants, I wish ya'll the best.

During the trust creation process, Helena Mock and Cathy Sears navigated our through the various topics, patiently and thoroughly answered our questions, and prepared various associated documents. We appreciated the pacing that allowed time for reflection, questions, and document review. From the paralegals to the attorneys named above, collegiality evident was evident as they engaged in client-focused work.

Ms. Mock worked with me to prepare a special needs trust to take care of my son in the future. Everyone with whom I dealt handled the task with the utmost professionalism and sensitivity to my son's special needs. My questions and concerns were dealt with in an expeditious and clear manner. I probably asked some questions more than once; each time the response was respectful as well as enlightening. This was a task to which I wasn't looking forward. Had I known how smoothly Ms. Mock and her staff handled the process, I would have taken care of this matter much earlier. I look forward to working with this group as time progresses and changes will inevitably have to be made.

I recommend Donna Wilson to anyone who is looking for an estate planning or elder law attorney in the Williamsburg area. Although I am an elder law attorney in Tampa, how I met Donna told me everything I needed to know about her and her law firm. We spent several days at a professional “bootcamp” with the sole focus on becoming the best advocates we can be for the people that trust us with their lives as well as their post-mortem affairs. Donna stood out as an extremely capable attorney ready, able and willing to provide clients – not only the highest level of skill and expertise – but all the aspects of respect, empathy and attention lost today in our profession. If you are in need of genuine people who can meet your estate planning or elder law needs, do not look any further than Donna Wilson, and Wilson Law PLC.

We had our estate planning done by another attorney several years ago and needed to update documents. Donna Wilson found several errors and inconsistencies in our old documents that would not only have cost us more money, but could have left us and our child unprotected at the time of our death or disability. We now have piece of mind knowing we have had a thorough and professional review of our situation and that we now have a plan that is tailored to our needs. As we were deciding what plans to make for our family several alternate scenarios were created to give us examples of what could happen depending on our choices and it was clear that Ms. Wilson clearly knows her field. The process was smooth, yet complete, and the office staff was quite responsive to questions and concerns. Communication has been wonderful and the documents we received were carefully explained and extremely well organized. We are relieved and confident that we made the best decision in choosing Wilson Law.

As a couple quickly approaching the age for retirement, we turned to Donna Wilson and her team for help in protecting our wealth. The process was painless and easy to understand. With children and grandchildren in the mix, we wanted to make sure our assets would be available to them upon our departure from this life. We were able to create an exceptional plan, legacy trust, and other components to make certain our wishes would be carried out. We were so impressed with the final outcome of this effort that we shared our experience (not all the details) with other family members. Three other family members have since turned to Donna and her team and completed very similar processes. It sure is a good feeling to know that our family will benefit from the fruits of our life-long hard work and not a bunch of bureaucrats.

My wife and I recently turned to Trey Parker to assist us in restating our revocable living trust, which was long overdue for top to bottom updating. Our family profile and circumstances present the types of complex considerations that are undoubtedly common to many families, involving the lives of adult children, grandchildren, individual needs, special health concerns, education costs, etc., and all the various asset distribution options. This requires the highly skilled legal analysis, thoughtful insights, extensive experience, and deep understanding of estate and tax laws that Trey displayed and delivered every time we met or talked with him. His ability to immediately connect with us as clients, listen intently, and come to understand our family situation so that he could craft a trust that best meets our specific needs was remarkable. We have tremendous respect for Trey and deeply appreciate his skilled handling of our trust. My wife and I would urge anyone seeking top-tier legal assistance with their trust and estate planning to meet with Trey at his offices in Williamsburg. He is a credit to the legal profession.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Williamsburg, Virginia?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
