Kristina was very helpful during the initial consultation. She agreed to prepare the final documents for my divorce. She represented me and I did not need to contact the other attorneys or go into court. She made the process easier to go through and I felt supported during that time. She is a great attorney. I hope to never go through something like this again, but if I do, I'll choose her to represent me.

I have an extensive track record of working with Kristina, as she represented my family through a very complicated guardianship case. After 7months, 200 emails, 40+ phone calls and an all-day mediation, I can say with confidence that she is an excellent attorney and I recommend her without hesitation. She is smart, strong, empathetic, and ridiculously hard working. I was particularly impressed with her ability to navigated complex family dynamics, as well as her responsiveness and reliability.

My experience with this firm was not positive. I hired Kristina for a divorce through a workplace referral. Her office got the first billing wrong and then informed me that they would not correct it for a month. Once I insisted that it be corrected immediately, they sent to corrected statement to the wrong email address. Then, when I informed her office that I wasn't confident that they could accurately handle my case and would hire another attorney, they're response was to attack me and blame me for not responding to their requests in a timely manner. I'm not sure what that had to do with the errors they made, but I guess it made them feel better? They also returned paperwork to my OLD home address, to my EX, after I specifically gave them instructions to send it to a different address, in a different city. I parted ways with them in early August, and just finally received the balance of my paperwork due at the end of last week, about one month later. Because of their uncooperative attitude, I used a company representative to get my retainer and paperwork back.

We had an incredible experience with Kathy! She's not only super knowledgeable but also really attentive to every detail of our case. What truly made her stand out was her commitment to fairness and respect for everyone involved. It was crucial for us to handle things amicably, especially considering the best interests of our child, and Kathy nailed it. Unlike some lawyers we talked to before choosing her, she never encouraged us to play dirty. Her integrity was through the roof, and she delivered great results, getting us everything we asked for while always prioritizing what was best for our child above all else. For anyone looking for a lawyer who absolutely has your back, achieves great outcomes, and keeps your child’s welfare at heart, we can’t recommend her enough.

Thank you to Kathy, I feel blessed to have Kathy by my side during my divorce journey. My experience was unique and demanded an extra level of attention and care, which Kathy provided. She dotted my i's and crossed my t's, steering me towards a better outcome. What truly sets Kathy apart is her genuine care, attentive listening, and vested interest in her clients' well-being. She's not just a legal advocate; she becomes apart of the battle (apart of my new family) who fights tirelessly when necessary, yet knows when to pause and reassess. Kathy's knack for thinking outside the box and asking insightful questions prompted me to stop and reconsider MANY aspects of my case.  Needing an attorney is never a joyful experience, but having someone like Kathy in your corner makes all the difference. Kathy, your unwavering belief in ME means the world. Thank you!

I hired Deborah blind to handle my very difficult divorce. Since I had never been divorced before she was so patient and understanding of my situation. I did not know where to begin or where to go, she helped me greatly and relieved a lot of my anxiety. It was great to turn my stress over to a professional. In the end her professionalism and knowledge gave me the peace of mind to carry on as a single person.

I hired Deborah Gordon for my child support modification case after a breach of trust by my prior attorney, which occurred shortly before my trial date. I was reluctant to trust anyone at that time, and I never imagined I'd trust an attorney again. Deborah changed that. She is highly professional, ethical and committed to fighting for her clients best interests. She kept me fully informed throughout the entire process. She was thorough with her explanations of my options and made sure I fully understood the impact of the decisions I was making. She took my case during the holidays and with little time left to prepare for court dates. She was completely on top of everything, and went above and beyond to meet deadlines. Once I realized I was in good hands, my stress level went down. Her attention to detail resulted in catching a significant mistake made by my previous attorney. She advocated tenaciously on my behalf, and for the first time I felt like I had a voice in my case. Her efforts resulted in a successful modification, and by the end of the case she had truly earned my trust and respect. My only regret is not knowing her in time to handle my original divorce case.

Deborah Gordon is excellent! She is not only aggressive in her style when need be, but she also encourages peaceful settlements. I went to her because my friend recommended her and upon meeting her, I immediately dropped my attorney and hired her. She did more work in our first few meetings than my previous lawyer did in 3 months. She made time for me and she kept me focused on my goals. She recommended alternatives and what she felt was best, and really acted like a team player with me. She involved me in decisions and respected my concerns. I was and remain very, very happy with Deborah as my lawyer.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Auburn, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
