I retained Mr. Shane to represent me to amend the parenting plan with my daughter's mother. I could go into all the piddly details but instead I will tell you that Mr. Shane is very good at what he does! He replies promptly to email, he returns phone calls. Yes, these are things that I would expect from an attorney but he definitely follows through. He explains why some things should be done a certain way. If you have an idea about something but he doesn't think it will help or improve your case, he doesn't just say no. Instead, he takes the time to explain why and ultimately, it's the clients' decision. We were able to get the parenting plan updated to satisfy what is in the best interest of my daughter. I would also comment that Jazmyn, Mr. Shane's paralegal, is excellent too. She took all of my calls and was able to put my mind at ease, which was often.

From intake to trial, Charlie was patient, calm, and understanding with me. He beat the state's statistics against fathers with apparent ease, resulting in full custody of my two young daughters. Our family has immeasurably improved thanks to Charlie!

Charlie and his team has been nothing less than exceptional! Since the first time I spoke with him about my case he has taken an approach of calm, positive, and supportive to guide me every step of the way. Charlie and his team have kept open lines of communication while trying to optimize my best interest through a difficult time. The guidance, experience, and knowledge on how to approach and execute things is amazing! Charlie always had my best interest and would often suggest things to help me and the situation in coming to a win/win scenario. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to support me. Moving forward, I plan to keep Charlie on speed dial, not only for anything in the future, but recommending him to everyone. I can’t say enough positive things and how much gratitude I have for Charlie. My case would have not ended so favorably had he not been my lawyer.

I am grateful for Charlie’s expertise and professionalism. He was able to clearly navigate my case without getting distracted by the curve balls that were sent out way. He focused on the main issues and upheld the truth in court. I spent years representing myself pro se battling my ex in court over frivolous issues and false accusations. It was exhausting! Until I teamed up with Charlie I wasn’t sure I was even going to see an end to the court process. Charlie was able to sort through my mountainous pile of court paperwork, find what was of utmost importance, and focus on that in a timely manner. The outcome of my Child Support modification case turned out far better than I had expected and I have Charlie to thank for that. He patiently helped me through countless revisions and numerous court delays. I’m finally in a place where I feel like my ex will no longer use the legal system to abuse me and he now knows the consequences for doing so. I highly recommend Charlie for anyone struggling through a high conflict divorce.

Karen was a delight to work with. She was efficient, kind, and gave sound advice even though it meant I would not need to use her services any further. She really was looking out for my interest as a client; this is the hallmark of an honest professional who is not looking at you with dollar signs in their eyes!

Karen is an incredible lawyer. She was professional, savvy, and decisive, making what was a disempowering wrongful termination experience into an empowering process for me. She was open about all processes, consulted me regularly and kept me well informed. Not only was she professional, but also compassionate toward me as her client. Reminding me to take care of myself during the legal process. She frequently checked in just to see how I was doing and overall it was a very human experience. She brought a great deal of wisdom alongside her knowledge, both extensive, and it was a pleasure to have her as my lawyer because she gave me confidence in our case and modeled that confidence in all her communications. 10/10 would recommend.

I cannot say enough good things about Piper Thornburgh and the excellent legal work she did for us in a recent real estate transaction. From reviewing and advising us on a real estate sale agreement, to dealing with and quickly resolving an issue with the title company, Piper was great to work with and her advice and work top notch.

We received a letter from an attorney threatening legal action if we didn’t respond to alleged property line encroachments. We were able to see Piper within a few days. She evaluated our situation and advised us of alternative approaches to minimize costs and take advantage of our long time property ownership. Piper worked closely with us to prepare our case and negotiate a boundary line agreement with the neighboring property owners. She kept us appraised of progress and set a positive tone in working with the attorneys for the neighbors. At all times she was very professional and focused on our best interests. We would recommend her unreservedly.

Piper provided advice, guidance and support throughout a long process that resulted in the successful transfer of ownership of a small business. This was a complicated transfer and required Piper's expertise and persistence working with me as well as the new owner. She had contacts and knowledge that were invaluable in concluding this transaction.

I very much recommend working with Leigh Noffsinger, JD, if you are in search of a family law expert who approaches each situation with clear goals and no nonsense, and with a strong mix of compassion in working toward collaborative resolutions. My experience in working with her was via the collaborative divorce process, and it was the best experience in what is always a tough situation. I'd refer any potential client to her practice and hold her work in the highest regards.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bainbridge Island, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
