Shelby Lemmel is one of the best appellate attorney in the State of Washington. Both she and her partners, Ken Masters, are widely known within our legal community as the appellate attorneys who other attorneys go to when they need to preserve their trial court wins or appeal an erroneous judicial decision. I know because I hired Shelby and her firm not only to represent my clients, but also my firm, on several occasions. Her analytical skills are deep and expansive just as her writing skills are powerful and persuasive. There has been numerous occasions where I read her appellate briefs and am mesmerized at how well-researched and scholarly it was written. As an attorney who does trial work that occasionally goes on appeal, I can personally attest that you will well-served with her representation. Hence, I endorse her in the strongest terms possible without reservation.

When I recently had some family business and estate planning to do, I engaged Lincoln Miller. The two characteristics I value most in attorneys are competence and trustworthiness. Lincoln has the relatively rare (for attorneys) combination of both. Our circumstances were unusual and a little complicated, but Lincoln grasped our needs and helped us create two revocable trusts and and LLC. His advice was solid, his billing was reasonable and his level of service was exceptional.

Lincoln is very professional and a great lawyer. I somehow feel like I am his only client when talking with him - he never says he will have to review my file and get back to me. He can remember the details of my specific situation with great ease. He is also very responsive both via phone and email. I work with him from out of state to help out my father in WA and the distance is not an issue in our communications and he has been very flexible in meeting me when I am in WA. Most importantly, his services are superb and he delivers on everything we have set to do. I'm very confident in Lincoln's abilities. If you are looking for a great lawyer who is also a stand up guy, I'd recommend Lincoln every time.

I very much recommend working with Leigh Noffsinger, JD, if you are in search of a family law expert who approaches each situation with clear goals and no nonsense, and with a strong mix of compassion in working toward collaborative resolutions. My experience in working with her was via the collaborative divorce process, and it was the best experience in what is always a tough situation. I'd refer any potential client to her practice and hold her work in the highest regards.

I contacted Jane Morrow, and set up a meeting. Jane was prompt and very understanding. She conducted herself in a friendly and professional manner. I agreed to hire her on the spot. Jane represented me in what was a tortuous and extended legal process that was designed to make me give up and go away with nothing. Jane's constant encouragement and reassurance helped to get me through the process. We settled our case out of court in a very favorable manner due to Jane's awesome skills as a negotiator. I am grateful to Jane and her firm for their diligence and aggressive professionalism. I would recommend Jane's services to anyone!

After I was injured by a negligent doctor, I selected Ms. Morrow as my attorney because of her history as a competent lawyer and a Registered Nurse. It was wonderful to have an attorney who was knowledgeable in the medical aspects of my case; many of the attorneys I initially consulted with had to stop me to explain what certain terms meant, and that was incredibly frustrating for me. I never had this issue with Jane. In addition to her medical knowledge, Ms. Morrow had an instinctual and intellectual understanding of what to do at every turn in my case. She was always supportive and explained the legal things I did not understand without ever making me feel stupid or burdensome. I really believe that Ms. Morrow cares about her clients' long-term well being. How many lawyers can you truly say care about their clients as people, and not just as case statistics? In my case, for example, Ms. Morrow supported me in pursuing action against the hospital and doctor who negligently assaulted me; other attorneys I consulted early on wanted me to settle for as much money as possible as early as possible, even if it meant not pursuing action against the hosptial. Jane really listened to me and understood that I wanted, more than anything, to spread the word and prevent this person from hurting anyone else. She never made me feel pressured to come to a rapid monetary conclusion to the detriment of my personal goals. I cannot say enough about what a great attorney Jane Morrow and her cohorts are. If it is important to you that you connect with an attorney who listens to and supports a client through difficult times, who is knowledgeable about medicine in addition to law, and who is a generally good and caring person, you cannot go wrong with Jane Morrow. I am so greatful that I found her during the worst time in my life, and I cannot imagine what might have happened if I had been swayed to employ anyone else.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bainbridge Island, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
