I happned to obtain Roy's services after trying and paying other attorneys; my matter was simple. Other attorneys I attempted to use prior weren't reliably faithful in communication nor as knowledgeable as Roy for my situation. I was so fortunate to have obtained Roy. Roy was so clear in communication, mindful of the process, always made me aware about the matters both in in mediation as well as all costs every step of the way. Words cannot express how stellar, professional, compassionate, and kind Roy provided me; moreover the knowledgeable-based expertise Roy possessed to me was above and beyond others: Roy made the difference for me, but also for my family. Blessed and grateful I am. Thank goodness, thank you, Roy.

I consulted with Roy when my marriage had become significantly strained, in order to explore various "what if" scenarios. Roy was very knowledgeable RE: divorce law, with a focus on collaborative divorce. He understood that I loved my wife and kids very much and respected that I still hoped at that point to save my marriage. He was supportive of me efforts early in the process, to reconcile with my wife as we attended couples counseling, trying to work through our marital issues. My spouse eventually discontinued counseling. My case eventually became high conflict and contentious, with my spouse unfortunately refusing a collaborative pathway, so I am not able to comment on Roy's handling of the collaborative process. Nonetheless, in the scope of our work together, Roy was extremely professional. He always promptly answered my questions and empathetically addressed my fears. He respected where I was at mentally/emotionally in the process and I never felt like he was out to make busy work, just to increase revenues. When he recognized that a collaborative divorce process was not in the cards, he quickly arranged a seamless transition with a capable colleague who could do mediation and/or litigation. I highly recommend him especially for cases with couples that can maintain at least a modicum of rationality, civility and are able to focus on the long-term wellbeing of family members through the divorce process.

I was referred to Roy's office through my employer's employee assistance program when I requested help with my failing marriage. I really appreciated that Roy had made his practice part of this program. I think it really demonstrates his objective of helping couples work through the divorce process in a collaborative way. Such a better approach for all involved, especially the kids, than some of the other attorneys I consulted with before hiring Roy.

3
Knowledgeable and effective representation
“Roy and his staff were absolutely amazing!!!! I was beyond lucky to have found him, and he instantly was able to show the judge what was going on with my ex-wife's continual poisonous actions in turning my child against me.”

Cons
1
Unprofessional and poor communication in some cases
“First he double booked meaning I and another client showed up at the same time. [...] Third, he could not remember my child's name. He asked 3 times which I found not only rude but worried me that he would not remember details in a court room and finally he wasn't polite enough to shake my hand.”
2
Unwilling to take on certain cases
“Sadly he wasn't taking any more court cases but he was incredibly knowledgeable and still took the time to help me and point me in the right direction.”

Mr. Kleps was very helpful and kind when we had to go through what was my first probate. He understood our financial realities. He encouraged us to do what we could on our own, and was there 100% for the tasks that were beyond our capabilities. I highly recommend.

I have a traumatic brain injury. I was referred to him by the attorney who helped me to finally get social security disability after 6 years. That attorney referred me to Michael when I got my "back-pay" from SSD; and helped me to understand how getting a large amount of money could create financial havoc in my life-- losing my home in a public housing unit, losing my state paid caregiver 30 hrs. a week, and losing my state insurance that covers what my medicare never would. He did all of this in a kind, patient way; without ever making me feel like he was "timing" our first consultation or even counting every second when he did the paperwork. He is my favorite attorney ever, I have to say; and I have dealt with a few throughout my life. Thank you Michael!!!!

We were happy with the knowledge and experience Michael provided in preparing a will, Durable Power of Attorney and Health Care Directive for my husband and I. He was personable, respectful and listened to our concerns and wishes and helped us with the wording, offered advice concerning tax laws and beneficiaries, and provided our documents in a timely manner.

Peggy Underbrink is an attorney who is knowledgable about the law ands the process that it follows. She is a kind person who stands up for her clients rights without backing down from the other side. She is probably the best attorney that I have ever had to hire.

After being terminated while on Maternity leave for my first child Peggy looked at my case and was very thorough in explaining everything I could anticipate with my case...good and the bad. She did an amazing job and jumped multiple hoops for almost 5 years to help me settle my case. My former employers attorney was so unprofessional and Peggy fought every moment. Every unlikely situation that happen in the case did but she did her best in standing up for me. I appreciate her hard work and always trying to keep her costs under control during the financially and emotionally tough times! I would highly recommend Ms. Underbrink.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Bellingham, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
