Mathew has been amazing! He answered every call, did what he said he'd do, and advocated effectively on our behalf. We highly recommend GPL Personal Injury Attorneys, and specifically, Mathew Cole. They will be our first call should we ever need legal representation in the future.

I can't express how grateful I am for Mr. Lowell's help with my case! I had my divorce case dragging for 2 years before I found David and had him take over it. He was able to end it in 3 months in my very best favor! He is very professional, knowledgable and personal. I felt that he really cared about me and justice to be served. He also charged me a reasonable amount because I couldn't afford those ridiculous fees that other lawyers ask. I was lucky to find David Lowell and have him represent my case! I'll recommend him in a heartbeat. Thank you, David, for all your patience and support! Thanks for helping me win this case!

I met Jonathan just over 3 years ago after an incident that required me to seek legal help/support. I was turned away by one law firm and passed along by another law firm into the INCREDIBLY capable hands of Jonathan and his AMAZING team. I couldn't be more grateful that my case landed in the hands of Jonathan. He was kind and considerate while being upfront and honest regarding the legal battle that was ahead of me. But I never once was shaken because I knew Jonathan and his team were standing by side through it all. My case was a complicated one with many parties involved, some of whom were holding stubbornly firm and not accepting responsibility. But Jonathan did not give up or waiver. He persisted and never gave up on me or my case. He uncovered the facts and presented them in an undeniable way which eventually led to a settlement for not only me, but the other victims involved because their lawyers were unable to accomplish the settlement. Where they failed, Jonathan thrived and succeeded. If that doesn't tell you the kind of amazing lawyer he is, I don't know what will! I will never be able to say enough kind words about Jonathan and his team. For 3 years they never made me feel like my case was hopeless, they never made me feel like they were too busy to take my calls/emails and answer my million annoying questions. I always felt like a priority each time I interacted with anyone on Jonathan's team. The end result of my settlement was beyond my expectations and hopes. All thanks to this man and his team!

When I first met Jonathan it was in a Zoom meeting. He took his time explaining how his practice worked, what I could expect from him and assistants. What the fees would run, who they would be contacting to help solidify my claim. I never felt rushed and the person I am was respected and not condescended to if I lacked understanding. I would recommend Johnathan and his team to anyone who needed legal help.

After being in a bad car accident, someone recommended I meet with Jonathan. I was so glad I reached out! He listened to what happened and then took over dealing with everything so I could focus on getting better. Not having to fight with insurance companies or negotiate with the 'other side' myself significantly reduced my stress level. Jonathan and his team kept in contact with me throughout the process. Whenever I reached out to them, I had an answer within a day, if not within hours. In the end, Jonathan was able to negotiate a settlement that I was very happy with--and one I know I could not have gotten on my own.

Rob (and he asks his clients to call him Rob, not Mr. Jones) helped me when I stupidly got into some trouble. He helped me see my way through the trouble. I am very grateful to him. He is very experienced. I never dreamed that a lawyer could be so understanding.

Mr. Jones has represented me since 2004. I had several charges against me, and was looking at the possibility of spending time in prison. He handled everything for me while keeping me informed about the processes. I never had to do a day in prison or jail after he took over my legal matters for me, but I did have to do my part and quit participating in illegal activities and become a decent member of society. In 2013 I hired Mr. Jones to vacate my felony charges from my record. He did so quickly, and I didn't even have to show up in court. I am so grateful I chose him back in 2004, and couldn't think of a better criminal defense attorney in Skagit County!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Burlington, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
