Wow!!! Don't make any other call. Speaking with Wendy was the best thing I ever did. She , took the time, on the phone, to listen and refer me to where I needed to go and whom I needed to talk to. She truly was empathetic and understanding not just take $ and then say she could not help us. Going thru problems with family is hard enough then to pay for no help makes it worse, all you want is the right thing and Wendy is that one. Thankyou Thankyou Sooo much. Cari

I had some questions about the land covenants on a home I am purchasing in Lewis County. I spoke with Wendy about my concerns, and within a single evening, Wendy was able to provide me the details I was looking for. Wendy was responsive and communicative. I had also called another law office in the area with the same questions, and was told by the other law office that they wouldn't be able to find an answer for me. I'm relieved and impressed that Wendy was able to provide these answers before my grace period expired. I will definitely be calling Harris again in the event I need legal guidance.

10 stars to Harris Legal Office! In what seemed like a snap of the finger Wendy helped us with the paperwork to settle a family estate matter. All with a smile, promptness and communication that is just uncommon in this world. Thank you Wendy!

Contacted Manual and consulted with him on creating an LLC. Very knowledgeable of the subject and was very capable of explaining the pro's and con's. Felt that he exceeded my expectations. Would feel comfortable in working Manual in any legal capacity. I would feel very agreeable with anyone that I know that would have a reason to contact him. He represents a positive image when in court.

Jennifer has helped my family on more than one occasion. She advised me during my divorce. She helped me modify the parenting plan when I relocated. She held my ex accountable to pay his share of our daughter's medical bills. Just recently, she represented me to negotiate a child support modification. Her advice and representation has always been excellent. She understands and respects my priorities and values. Her fees are fair. I am so grateful for Jennifer's advocacy when I've needed it.

Jennifer helped me to obtain a legal separation. She was responsive and concerned to my specific needs, gave great advice, always responded quickly and managed to get his lawyer moving. She explains everything in down to earth terms and is laid back and makes you feel comfortable. She took me through a terrifying ordeal and helped me to come out with my head held high. She gave emotional as well as legal support and I will go to her for any legal matters and HIGHLY Recommend her to any and all....oh and she is very fair and reasonable on her fees! The ex's attorney fees were triple what mine were!

I have 8 children and was facing a divorce - demanded by my spouse of over 30 years - that I did not want. My spouse had been gone for several years but wanted me to carry her financially so she could continue her permanent vacation. My priority - having complete control of the children - was understood by Jennifer and she laid out my options and likely responses by the court. Jennifer never 'blue-skied' me, but was there each step of the process and was consistently, ALWAYS right on the money with advice on how best to wind our way through the options available as well as negotiating agreements. In the end, despite the arcane demands of my now ex-spouse, Jennifer kept me calm and focused on what was important and led the way to a divorce I am very, very happy with. Jennifer is professional, knowledgeable and the best!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Chehalis, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
