Amanda is a godsend. I had a tough time not only dealing with my child's father, but finding someone willing to take on a parenting plan not tied to a divorce. She was able to deftly navigate antagonistic emails in a timely fashion, made sure she was available at critical events and only billed for time spent, and protected my daughter and myself by making sure I didn't sign anything without her review. Amanda made a difficult and time-consuming process as painless as possible. I highly recommend her!

Amanda is very knowledgeable and compassionate. Her experience with family law is evident. She is a first class attorney with integrity. I wish I had worked with her to settle my divorce - she helped me (after my divorce had already been finalized for several years) with one item that had been lingering from the settlement and with parenting plan deviations that had cropped up.

Going through a separation is hard enough but having to go through it when a child is involved makes it 10x harder. While still grieving and being so confused on what to do next I contacted Amanda’s office to schedule a consult. During the consult Amanda was extremely mindful, understanding and patient, she talked me through exactly what needed to happen and even provided me with options on how she would be able to help depending on how much I was wanting to put into the process. After thinking it over I hired Amanda and asked that she handle everything and she delivered! The process was so easy and she walked me through it the entire time. Amanda’s communication was amazing and she made sure to respond to any questions I had either same day or the following business day. While working with Amanda I could tell she truly cared about me, when I would have guilt about any part of the situation she would listen and give me the best advice, she never pushed me to do anything I truly didn’t want to do. I can’t thank Amanda and her team enough for helping me through the hardest situation I have ever encountered in my life. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone that is needing help. As they won’t be disappointed.

Could not have asked for a better Attorney to help me with my case. Amanda is detail-oriented and also able to see the bigger picture. She allayed many of my concerns during my case, and brought to light many different considerations along the way. She is calm, understanding but takes the bull by the horns, and fights for her clients. She gave me such an immense amount of peace, when dealing with a very stressful case. She and her team were always there to help explain my options and key decisions for my case.

Amanda was my attorney throughout an incredibly acrimonious and long drawn out divorce process. From the moment she first took on my case until the judges final decree I felt supported, protected and advised with sound counsel. My nature is one of compromise and peace keeping, leaving me I’ll equipped to meet the aggressive and dishonest approach my ex took towards our child custody conflict. Gratefully, I had Amanda by my side through it all. She managed to be assertive and stalwart in her defense against the false claims being thrown at me while simultaneously respecting my desire to not enter into a mud slinging war with the mother of my child. I really appreciated her ability to recognize and understand the human element of such emotionally charged legal proceedings while still maintaining a strong sense of professionalism. She talked me through the rationale behind various approaches we could take to the proceedings, always showing me my options and allowing me to decide how to proceed. I felt part of the process. That I was working with her as a team. In determining something as near to my heart as my relationship with my child, I cannot emphasize how grateful I was to have my voice and desires heard and respected as our legal course of action was decided upon. I would not have made it through such an excruciating time in my life with out Amanda’s compassionate counsel. I highly recommend her as your ally as you navigate what is undoubtedly a difficult time in your life.

Peter is excellent in guiding you through the process of estate planning and probate process. He lead our family through the legal process in the death of a family member in settling the estate. Very easy to talk with and educated us along the way.

I haven't had the chance to hire William yet but he has been a tremendous wealth of information here at Avvo (and he even spent time on the phone with me), from dissolution to contempt to garnishment to foreclosure, etc. Life has been a bundle of jo … er… heck lately ;) and he seems to be able to provide information in every area I need help in. When I am ready to hire, it'll be William. :)

I had several questions about my foreclosure, that I posted in a few different comments with my questions, and William answered them all and he was exactly in line with what the "evil" QLS said.

I recently wrapped up a 2 year Probate experience with Sarah and her team. The entire time, they were conscientious, detailed oriented, organized, and communicative. Being an Executor was an eye-opening, steep-learning-curve experience, but Sarah and her team led the process smoothly with professionalism and integrity. Highly recommend!

We worked with Sarah and her team to put together our first estate plan. Along the way, they were incredibly responsive, accommodating, and answered all our questions in plain English (no small feat when dealing with legal documents). It was a painless process, and we're pleased with the end result.

The process was made clear and simple. Cost was reasonable. Both Sarah and Jennifer were informative and helpful. I have already recommended Jordan Law Firm to family and friends.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Edmonds, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
