Melanie is THE lawyer you want. She saved me from a pretty big hole I dug myself by being in denial at my divorce was going to happen. She had brilliant strategies and never let me get sucked into the narrative by the other side. I ended up with a rather favorable settlement and it's 100% to Melanie's credit. She will not steer you wrong. Thank you, Melanie for all your hard work.

I cannot express my gratitude and happiness to the entire team at the firm. Deane, Amy, Tina and Kara took the hardest year of our lives and made it as simple and clear as it could have possibly been. Forever grateful and will suggest them to anyone who needs legal council, specifically family law.

I would like to recommend Patrick and his law firm. I would also like to recognize Stephanie Kasper. I have been represented by them for the past two plus years. They give professional, personal and ethical care. I was treated with respect and care every step of the way. I could not ask for better care. I have so much respect for them as an injured worker they will work tirelessly to help you through every aspect of your claim and represent you. I was in very good hands and would recommend them to anyone dealing with a injured worker claim.

Patrick Cook and Stephanie Kasper of Walthew Law Firm did an amazing job for Me during my struggle with Sedgwick. Stephanie was my constant contact letting me know what I needed to do and what was going on step by step. Even when I was emotionally drained and out right terrified they both walked me through this process and made all the right moves and legal processing that needed to be done. I would recommend Patrick and Stephanie to anyone who needs a qualified and expert legal team to stand with you and protect your rights. My gratitude for your services forever. Thank You both!.

I was injured at work on my neck and had a fusion on my c5-c6 spine which left me with a lot of stress, questions and uncertainty. I contacted The Walthew Law Firm where I met with Patrick C. Cook and his paralegal Marilyn Mc Doo at their office, they were very prompt and professional during the consultation, I can say that the atmosphere and the way they greeted me made me feel like a very important client, and they took consideration for any conditions I had at the time. I then received representation from The Walthew Law Firm and have been pleased with my overall experience with them. Patrick Cook handled everything else, including the legal issues, doctor’s bills. The paralegal Marilyn Mc doo assigned to my case was amazing, she handled all my issues with L&I. On behalf of Patrick Cook, she responded promptly to my phone calls and emails and gave me solid advice on what to do next as my case was moving forward. I was so please on my decision to seek legal counsel, I frankly don’t know how I would have done it without The Walthew Law Firm. I would recommend 100% the firm, and if you do hire them as your lawyers, try to make sure Patrick C. Cook is your legal lawyer. Once again, thank you very much Patrick for been there for me. He is the BEST!!!!!!!!

I come from a family of attorneys, grandfather, father, brother, daughter and daughter-in-law so I've been around the profession my whole life. I can tell you that Michael is really "on his game" and he is what's really important in an attorney, knowledgable. But what makes working with Mike so great is his demeanor. Friendly, he listens, he asks really great questions and makes the whole experience easy. I can only highly recommend. If you're looking for a great family law attorney look no further.

Mike was very kind and understanding of my situation. He asked all the right questions but also provided much needed guidance to try to help me resolve my issue. He made sure I had all the correct paperwork and knew the applicable laws and rules that applied to me. But more importantly, he reached out to me to check in even after everything was done to make sure that I was doing okay. His effort and genuine concern really made all the difference in the world, while I was dealing with one of the most stressful situations I have ever been in. I would recommend him to anyone that is looking for a sincere, thoughtful and knowledgeable attorney.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Everett, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
