I’m a criminal defense lawyer with 45 years of experience, so when it came to my own difficult, complicated divorce, I knew I needed the best lawyer possible. My first lawyer was, at best, mediocre. Then, during a court zoom hearing a couple of months into my divorce, I watched and listened to Cynthia First representing another petitioner. It took me five minutes to make the decision to see if she would represent me. I know lawyers and the quality of what they do, having worked with or opposite as many as 400 of them. There are three at the top of the list, lawyers who are brilliant, caring, dedicated. Ms First is one of those three. She’s super smart and knowledgeable not only about the law but also about people and situations. Her skills in representation go beyond that: She cares about her clients. My emails were answered immediately, even during off hours. Superlative representation. Class act. Terrific person, terrific lawyer. (I also want to thank Peggy, the paralegal, whose organization and hard work made things so much better and easier for me.)

When I found Michael, I had just been fired by my second attorney, in a very complicated, difficult, and high stakes divorce case. My case had already been run into the ground by two previous lawyers and even more so by the entire so-called justice system. Things were at a very low point, and no one else would take my case because of how difficult it was. Michael almost didn’t take it himself. Immediately, I knew though, and I think he knew too, that he was the only one who could right the ship. With him by my side in the courtroom, the dynamic immediately shifted. I knew I was in good hands. His courtroom skills are second to none. And he’s not afraid to take it all the way when it’s the right thing to do. In my case, he’s the only one who could have. Even more extraordinary than his skills, knowledge, and demeanor in the courtroom was his demeanor as my attorney. He was always professional, ethical, patient, and compassionate. He always found a gentle and tactful way to disagree with me, and I always felt confident trusting his advice and deferring to his strategic decisions. He always listened to me and respected my opinions, and believed in me, in a way that no one else had. He was unwavering in his commitment to fight for me against all odds. And against all odds, and with so much tenacity, stamina, and grace, he won. We won. In the process, he restored my faith in the justice system and humanity as a whole. This attorney is a warrior of the highest order and an angel walking on earth. If you are lucky enough to get him in your corner, you should consider yourself truly blessed. His advocacy was worth every penny and more.

Michael represented me for my DUI and for my divorce. With both cases he has had my best interest in mind and has saved me a lot of lost dollars. I will always keep Michael as my attorney, I consider him a very honest and educated man, whom I will always trust with my legal issues.

Brilliant attorney. Capable of sorting out legal chaos with specialized knowledge. Strong no-nonsense and ethical. Highly intelligent. He is not afraid to go where others fear to tread. Caring advocacy for client rights neglected by others without hype, lies or the mind games some attorneys use. one of the best in areas of expertise.

I heard of Sabrina through a divorced moms group on Facebook. I sent her an initial email to request a meeting, but had already met with and retained a lawyer before I heard back from Sabrina. I decided to meet with her since she had been recommended. What I really liked about Sabrina (even though I had already signed on with my lawyer) was that she was so straightforward and she heard my whole story through. I like that she asked for a background from beginning to end and she actually listened and provided honest feedback throughout. She has a wonderful and friendly personality. I really enjoyed talking to her, and didn't feel judged, mocked or looked down on. Divorce is a difficult process and she explained everything. I left feeling that she really takes care of those she represents and has their back. Before I left she printed out a form for me to sign for the response to the petition and urged me to file it ASAP so I didn't lose any of my rights. I ended up going back to her for a final review of my final divorce papers after my lawyer made updates. I just wanted to make sure everything looked reasonable and nothing was missed since I have a daughter and didn't want to miss or make any mistakes. Sabrina met with me, even though I was running late. She never made me feel rushed and went through the paperwork with such detail. She ended up making lots of great changes that made me feel so relieved and grateful that I had come to see her. Even though I had already retained another lawyer, my two appointments with Sabrina were enough that I felt she deserved an excellent review. I would not hesitate to seek her advice and think I would have done really well with her as my lawyer. I would not hesitate to recommend her to others based on the advice she had given me.

Sabrina helped me with a divorce case. She instilled confidence and showed right away tremendous knowledge. In court she was pure grace. Every time opposing council spoke she was able to effectively render his point moot with just a few words. A great lawyer, I would recommend her in a second.

Being a critical thinker, rarely would I give 5 stars in all categories to rate any service or professional, but in this instance I am privileged to do so. Sabrina Layman has guided me in two separate proceedings through Child Support Modification/Post-Secondary Education support with an unwilling co-parent. Ms. Layman facilitates the legal process, making it significantly less stressful. She provides moral support, while maintaining reasonable legal costs. Her positive-minded attitude and perseverance for the benefit of the children instill immediate peace of mind and garner trust. Her paralegal Debbie Sherlock has highly comprehensive knowledge on documents and proceedings, is kind, efficient, and detail-oriented. Both are true advocates for the children and their clients, and I most favorably recommend their expertise for your family law litigation needs.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Everett, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
