Laurie Ummel and her assistant Kerry Davis make a remarkable team, distinguished by their genuine care and commitment to their clients. Laurie's approach to the legal process is exceptional; she conducts herself with a calm, compassionate demeanor, pairing logical and ethical decision-making with an optimistic outlook. This is particularly noteworthy in a process often perceived as daunting and uncertain. Her deep understanding of the legal system translates into optimal and effective outcomes, earning her the admiration of not only clients but also mediators and judges. In my personal experience, Laurie's guidance was invaluable during a challenging divorce. I approached her stunned and overwhelmed, but her expertise and focus on my son's well-being became a guiding light, leading to what I believe was the best possible outcome for all parties involved. Laurie's professionalism and dedication to prioritizing my son's interests helped us navigate through this difficult period guided by a moral compass. Divorce can be a bewildering journey as lives diverge in the twilight of uncertainty, but Laurie and Kerry's support helped make this transition a pathway to new beginnings. Their assistance was instrumental in helping me embrace these challenges as new opportunities. I am immensely grateful for their help, and their impact on our lives, especially my son's, has been profound. Thank you, Laurie and Kerry, for making a real difference.

Laurie represented me during my divorce. This was an extremely stressful time for me and I appreciated Laurie's approach. She spent time getting to know my situation and helped me consider viable options. Laurie was firm and to the point when needed and the times I contacted her for guidance, she was quick to respond. It can be easy to get caught up in the many small battles that accompany a divorce, but she helped me stay focused on the end result and resolution. In the end her strategy paid off and we were able to come to an agreement without a mediator.

I hired Laurie, Completed my paperwork within 24 hours. Paid $5,000 in full. Then I waited. I thought to myself... She is a professional, I need to be patient. I waited months and heard NOTHING. While in other courts I was defending attacks from the the person I was divorcing. Finally I called her and she asked if I would be willing to work with another attorney Ian Johnson. Assuring me he was capable of getting a judge to see this case. Well Ian constantly promised (assumed because he said he would do these things) ! He did nothing and $20,000 I've gotten nowhere. My case is LGBT and it's obvious they don't know anything in this area! I highly recommend anyone and everyone RUN away from the 2 attorneys that I have experience with.

Laurie Ummel did a fabulous job representing me in a child support case and kept me up to date every step of the way. She was a bit hard to get in touch with at times, perhaps due to a busy schedule. Bottom line, if you want positive results, and you are looking for an attorney who doesn't just look to get "the best deal for you", but strives to obtain a fair end result for all parties involved, then hire her!!!! In a world of where dad's have almost no rights, she helps mitigate that to the best of her legal abilities... She also works with you when making payment plans. I highly recommend her after a very pleasant experience considering the circumstances.

From the outset of our engagement, Andrew was uber prepared. He knew my case, knew my history, and knew the spectrum of potential issues. Prior to my court date, he ably led me through a comprehensive prep for the hearing--assuaging all of my concerns and answering questions. During the actual hearing, Andrew was polished and composed; he was organized, thorough and seemed to anticipate the judge's actions. He made this process seamless. I can not imagine a better disability advocate than Andrew McDonald.

I have know C. Anthony for almost 30 years. I was in professional school when he was in Law School. I have always been impressed with Tony's honesty and integrity. He has been my attorney for 25+ years and I have had outstanding service and attention. Tony has the rare gift of humor that dovetails well with a highly professional presentation. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for an honest, caring, spirited, "real" family man. He has unique experience in several aspects of the law and has represented me in the health professions admirably. I view Mr. Davis as one of my closest and respected friends as well as my attorney. 5 stars...a true "10".

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Everett, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
