Heather was actually initially retained by my sister to pursue guardianship or our mother, an incapacitated adult. The case was complicated because our mother is married and her spouse did not want my sister to be awarded guardianship, in spite of the fact he cannot care adequately for mom and mom was being neglected. Heather worked hard to approach the situation legally and diplomatically while at the same time maintaining a strong, firm line where mom's husband was concerned. She was prompt, thorough, and organized; certainly more organized than the Commissioner who was in the court when guardianship was awarded! Now that guardianship is decided, Heather is assisting us now with divorce proceedings against the spouse of our mother. Although we have, of course, retained a separate divorce attorney, the divorce is going nowhere due to lack of action on the part of the attorneys involved and Heather has been willing to assist with moving the divorce along so that we can hopefully have resolution on the situation soon.

I highly recommend Nicole to assist anyone who is having family legal issues with probate and wills. Her assistance was immeasurable. Where other lawyers gave up, Nicole dug in, found the facts and assisted with difficult and stubborn family members. Her legal knowledge and calm attitude made this difficult time palatable. I could not have made it through the loss if my father without her. My siblings and I would have lost everything without her expertise. I was lucky to find her!!

I hired Nicole during a difficult time (the settlement of my mother's estate). Through all the sibling shananagins, Nicole helped me keep a clear head. She was tough and held everyone to their responsibilities. In the end, this helped to keep the family peace. I believe I would have been cheated out of my estate had Nicole not been there to stand up for me. She was empathetic to this challenging situation and kept me from making emotional decisions. She's everything I could have hoped for in an attorney and I will always appreciate her being my support.

After meeting with Rachel one time I knew she was exactly who I was looking for to represent me in a collaborative divorce (already in progress). She is smart, frank and had a unique blend of mediation, litigation and collaborative law experience. Rachel quickly got up to speed and sustained momentum until the end. She was available in person, phone or email keeping me informed and was always prompt to reply. Rachel is an expert at keeping things on track without making me feel rushed to make decisions. She could decipher what I was trying to say and assured me that there were no stupid questions. Divorce is an emotional experience which Rachel deftly handled. She didn’t spin me up or minimize my feelings but rather redirected me to stay focused and moving forward. I truly appreciate Rachel and highly recommend her and her team.

Rachel helped me fix a messy custody (dis)agreement, made more complex by being a military family with both parties residing out of state. I sincerely wish I had utilized her during my actual divorce, and saved some of the headaches my previous counsel didn't consider. She communicated clearly and consistently with me while I was overseas, and helped address areas I hadn't considered as potential conflicts. She put in long hours during mediation sessions with my Ex, assisting me with the best possible outcome without going to trial. 10/10, I highly recommend.

Matthew Ennis is one of a kind. How often do you run into a skilled attorney who also happens to be a decent human being. First off, he created a fee agreement that took my run-down finances into account. Then, as we started working together – Matthew helped me with a complex severance agreement - he was patient in the extreme. And his legal advice was consistently spot on. Matthew is a sharp attorney and a compassionate psychologist rolled into one guy.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fircrest, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
