I've retained Dave on various legal issues for my business for about five years now. I first hired him to help deal with a breach of contract and he was able to resolve that without going to court or arbitration. What I most appreciate about Dave is he will neither talk down to me nor get caught up using jargon; instead of explaining things I can google for myself, he will explain what the actual legal issues are and provide insight coming from experience that aren't obvious to a layperson. I'm grateful for the fact that he's always been in my corner no matter how small the issue, and I have always been able to reach him whether I have a problem or just seeking advice. Do yourself a favor and hire the man!

I contacted Dave when I needed help with a rather complicated real estate transfer to a family member. Dave was very knowledgeable on the subject, providing me the information I needed to proceed with this sensitive transaction. He was very prompt in carrying out the work to be done, following up with me very quickly and responsibly, and was very easy to reach. He went above and beyond my expectations and was a joy to work with.

I contacted Janelle and was pleasantly suprised by the quick response that she could and will help me. I was going through a rough time in my life and money was an issue, but she was more than willing to help me through it, and she did. Janelle was very sincere every time I contacted her through e-mail and phone contact. I did not feel intimidated or rushed when dealing with Janelle. She was very thoughough and followed through on all assignments. There was a point in my case that she really pulled through and helped me tremendously with my parenting plan. Being a mother herself, she beleives in equality and whats right for the children. All and all Janelle was superb and i will recommend her to anyone that needs a divorce attorney.

I needed help with my Parenting Plan and Order of Protection against my daughter's father and I found Janelle through the King County Bar Association. I had had a really bad experience with a previous lawyer and was a bit discouraged with the whole situation. Janelle was very enthusiastic and reassured me that everything was going to be ok. She jumped right into my case, eventhough it was such short notice and I couldn't have asked for better results. The outcome was everything I had hoped for and more. Janelle never gave up and kept me completely imformed about what was going on at all times. She is very personable and passionate about her job. Thanks to her, my daughter and I are now safe. I couldn't have asked for a better lawyer!

I am a new landlord and had a very nasty tenant dispute issue at the end of February this year, I have consulted with Janelle and her experience and quick instructions have impressed me to continue working with her until the dispute was successfully resolved. Janelle has demonstrated her solid experience, responsive attitude and good negotiating skills in communicating and negotiating with the tenant, who end up paid rent to the date when new tenant moved in. Besides the case itself, Janelle cares about her client by reviewing and revising our rental lease agreement to make it more protective for potential conflict between landlord and tenants, and she also provided very important suggestions and many practical tactics in handling problems in rental business. I have gained confidence by working with Janelle, and as a landlord I strongly recommend her to others who are seeking professional help regarding tenant and landlord issues.

Being injured from an auto collision with an at-fault driver, their insurance company, and workers comp since it was during work seemed like a daunting and complex task. There are so many personal injury attorneys out there and only a few whom you can trust that's in your best interest. I did some extensive research online before choosing Colburn Law and I'm truly thankful I did. From start to finish, their attention to my case never wavered. I've dealt with a large law firm regarding business matters in the past and an individual firm for a past auto accident so I had some positive and negative experiences and reservations. Their professionalism, knowledge, availability, and promptness in response blew me away. Greg and Tina have the professionalism, and knowledge of a large expensive law firm but with more personalized attention and true dedication to get you the best settlement on your behalf. For example, my case was settled two years ago but due to the complexities of medical bills paid out by worker's comp and their slow response to negotiating a settlement, and finding any outstanding medical bills, was not an easy task. Even though my case was settled two years ago, Greg and Tina continued to work diligently on my behalf to get me the best medical settlement last week. Which attorneys will work on your behalf for two years after? I highly recommend Colburn Law to anyone in need of a trustworthy personal injury attorney.

I cannot speak highly enough of Attorney Greg Colburn and his team. From the moment I reached out to them for help with my personal injury cases, particularly the motor vehicle collision and trip-and-fall incidents, they have been nothing short of exceptional. Greg's diligence and honesty throughout the process were truly remarkable. Despite the complexities of my cases and the added challenges of my disability, he and his team were there for me every step of the way. Their attention to detail and unwavering commitment to my well-being made all the difference during a difficult time. What sets Greg Colburn apart is not only his legal expertise but also his genuine care and compassion for his clients. He and his team went above and beyond to ensure that I received the support and representation I needed, and for that, I am incredibly grateful. I also want to commend the entire team for their professionalism and dedication. Each member played a crucial role in the success of my cases, and their collective efforts did not go unnoticed. In conclusion, if you are in need of competent and compassionate legal representation, look no further than Attorney Greg Colburn and his team. Their commitment to justice and their clients is unparalleled, and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Thank you, Greg, for everything you've done for me.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Issaquah, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
